Hey folks,

Cutting down in whatever way works is never a bad temporary goal. The NA beer can serve many positive purposes: for those who like the taste of beer, it is a nice change from water; helps avoid too many questions socially; has less calories than real beer; can help you mentally feel like you are not giving up something you enjoy. Foxman's point is very true- most drinking has to do with the effect. If you can settle for the taste, without having it trigger you for alcohol, then it's a good alternative. Otherwise, not. It's probably quite dependant on the individual.

Keep us posted on how you make out!

Personally i have no urge to even try those non-alcoholic beers. Never drank for the taste, I drank for the effect alcohol had in me. Today, thru the grace of working the program of AA, I have no desire to even attempt to try these drinks. Cos, my alcoholic mind will trick me into something else. Thats what i did we back in 91 when i quit alcohol (hard liquor). But then few friends of mine conned me into believing beer is good for my well-being  So i next 16 years went from occasion beer to weekend and then back to daily drinking. Finally when GA opened up for high octane beers, it sealed my collapse. And AA has no opinion on outside issues, all it does is help us with living life free of booze.

Well, I'm still very early in my sobriety, will be a month in a few days, but yes, I do and will continue to abstain completely.  I have tried moderating in the past and found that an NA beer rounds out a meal when I'm havin chili or fried catfish and shuts up the drunk friends at the bar.  Even now that I'm not drinking at all, I will not feel guilty bout havin one and still will contend I am not drinking, but I can't speak to the mind of an AA expert.  If you want info on AA thoughts & guidelines, foxman is you man.  :-)

foxman?  you out there?  I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts on the subject as well.  Very good, interesting question, Duffy!

Hey LittlT, I agree O'Douls is pretty tasty too. Do you completely abstain from alcohol? Just wondering if you or anybody else knows if non-alcoholic beer is considered a safe substitute for alcoholics? Personally, I have not completely given up alcohol, just trying to cut way back, and NA beers like O'douls have helped fight urges (especially while fishing or BBQing!), but I wonder if programs like AA would consider that "playing with a loaded gun?" What do you guys think?

Kinda hard to find, but I highly recommend Clausthaler.  I've always been partial to Paulaner hefeweizen...or just hefeweizens in general so if you like them too, give it a try.  :-)  Most bars don't carry it so I settle for Odouls Amber which is pretty decent if I really want a beer and I'm out for dinner or at a bar.

In regards to the "pre-dinner cocktail urges", for all you beer lovers who have quit or are cutting back, I find that the non-alcoholic options really help fight the urge. Like Mary I would intend to have 1 or 2 beers before dinner, then wouldn't you know? A six pack later dinner was ready! I recommend Becks non-alcoholic, very tasty!

Wishing you good luck and acknowledging the courage you show marylizy!  Thanks for posting.  It IS a new month and a good time to start anew.  In my breakdown of goals, I'm to be starting every other day drinking ... "forgot" yesterday, so today is a drink free day.  I'm going to borrow your cranberry juice and seltzer plan.  Here's to baby steps forward

Yesterday was March 1st and my goal is not to drink alone. This is one of my biggest downfalls. Dinner time comes, I love to cook and sip on a glass of wine preparing dinner and then, guess what, the bottle is gone before dinner is even ready. Not a good thing so last night I sipped on seltzer with a hit of cranberry juice and it did the trick. Tried to think it was just the idea of having a glass in my hand and it worked. Wish me luck tonight.
