One other thought - while I was journalling (something I have never done before) I was trying to put a finger on my feelings.  What I came up with is a sense of loss.  Is this common?  I also have an overwhelming sense of uncertainty which I can understand on a rational level, but the sense of loss is disconcerting.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and support.  24 hours in and not so bad.  Minor cravings last evening - ice cream helped.  I appreciate the suggestion of AA, but in my community and given my position in the community it would quickly become public knowledge.  It is not a community that engenders trust.

Welcome to the group.
Keep us posted as to your progress.

If you would like to seek help you might want to Consider Alcoholics Anonymous. You might be surprised like I was. I also live in a smaller community and I was surprised to meet many long term AA members that I knew but had no idea they had drinking problems. Also I discovered that most people are supportive and don't put me down when I choose to let them know I am an alcoholic.

Hello allegron,

Welcome to the site, you have come to a really good place! You will surely figure out your goal in time. I can relate to not wanting people in your small community to find out about some of the things we are dealing with. The most important thing right now is to gain control of your alcohol consumption. Do try eliminating alcohol altogether and see how this goes. For me, it was difficulty in the beginning, but the best decision i've ever made. Post here anytime you have questions or just need some support.

Hello allegron,

First of all welcome to the Alcohol Help Center and congratulations on taking the first steps to getting any help you need.

Start working through the program, a big component of it is learning about yourself so you can better understand your drinking.

Some people find that taking a break from drinking for a while really helps them get control of their alcohol use.

Start reading through the forums. I think you'll find there are many people out there you can relate to. The forum is also full of advice and will offer you the wisdom of many diverse experiences in relation to alcohol addiction.

Check back soon and let us know how you're doing. We're always here to answer any questions you have or to provide you with some feedback.

Hi – I am not sure my goal is to quit drinking completely, but it may become my goal.  I drink everyday and have done so for over twenty years.  Usually 5-7 drinks per day.  Martini after work, followed by a rye and coke, wine with dinner and a nightcap before bed.  Weekends much more.  I have a great job and good family life.  Generally considered an upstanding member in our small community.  My drinking is scaring me – a lot.  Due to living in a rural community I am very uncomfortable in seeking help – there are no secrets in our town.  For the time being I am going to try to not drink anything and am worried about possible physical/emotional effects.  I am really hoping this forum can help.
