Johann,

Another thing that has worked for me is AA, that or other 12 steps groups might be an asset for you.

johann,

It's great that you've tried other avenues. We're pleased to have you join us and we're looking forward to support you and all members along the way.

What other counselling programs have I tried? Well, through work I saw counsellors on a couple of occasions. Trouble is, they ask the same predictable questions and I know all the right answers. It became some sort of game with me to go in, tell them what they wanted to hear, and then leaving with attitude unchanged. I think this support group is much better because you all know what I am going through as you're going through it yourselves. The discussions are real, not artificial or clinical like those I've had with counsellors dealing with people with addiction problems one session, then marital issues the next, then who knows what the next.

Johann,

It sounds like you are at the right starting point -and partly thats the point of honest admission. What other couselling or programs have you tryed? Also what are you doing to help yourself?

Where do I drink? Usually out of the home. In the past I've gotten to the point of hiding it at home (never works for long). Or say I'm going to the gym when I really go to the pub. All sorts of nonsense. If that creative energy was only used positively! One day at a time...more like 5 minutes at a time some days!

Make alternate arrangements and yes do go for coffee with a friend or even a movie!

Start making a list of activities or relaxation techniques that you want to do at home or after work.

Walking
Stretching
Good book
Bath
Write a letter
Call a long lost friend

johann,

One day at a time. It's great that you've starting going to caffes instead of pubs. Little steps can be very helpful in achieving your final goal.  Have you started working throught the program?

How on earth I got to this point with my drinking I don't know. Financially, socially, professionally it makes absolutely no sense to continue down the path I'm on. So, why do I keep doing it? I've pretty much given up trying to figure out why and want to focus on stopping. I feel great when I don't drink, so I need to keep that in mind all the time. Going to the local cafe after work instead of the pub also feels great, but old habits are hard to break. I look forward to reading the posts in the forums as I already feel this site is more uplifting than any counselling or program I've tried before. Looking forward to feeling better about myself and my life.
