Members,
The amount of alcohol you consume affects many aspects of your health.
In particular, excessive alcohol consumption can seriously impact your bone health and put you at risk for fractures and bone breaks.
*Alcohol interferes with your calcium absorption and vit D production.
*Alcohol also increases your parathyroid hormone, which in turn depletes the calcium reserves in your body.
*Alcohol also affects other hormones in your body such as testosterone, estrogen and cortisol. This puts men and women at greater risk for osteoporosis as all these hormones interact with bone formation and other aspects of bone health.
Having said that, here are a few tips to help get your bones back in shape:
* Nutrition is key! Focus on low fat dairy products and leafy greens
* Spend plenty of time outdoors. Sunshine is the greatest source of vit. D. Other sources of vit. D. include liver and egg yolks.
* Regular exercise is also important. Walking and other exercises that force your bones to bear weight are wonderful. Other examples include dancing, weight lifting and running.
Hope this helps.
Danielle
