Quitting using NRTs

4 years ago 0 796 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Kal,
Congratulations on quitting smoking!  Even with the help of NRT, your body is better off than smoking. I too quit with the aid of the patch, for the first 30 days. Then the adhesive started to make me break out, but by then, I was pretty confident that I could continue my quit journey without NRT, and I was right.  There is nothing wrong with using an aid or two to help you quit this nasty life sucking habit. As for asking about cutting your patch program short, its up to you. If you think you can do it and it makes you feel better about lessening the addiction to nicotine, go for it. If you do cut back, and things start getting harder for you, you can always go back to what the patch manufacturer recommends. The important thing is that in the end, you reach your goal of becoming a non-smoker. We quitters are proud of our accomplishments and you should be too.
How long did you smoke, and how many a day?  Have you tried quitting before?
" I am trying to cut the period because I am smoke free but not nicotine free using those patches and I am just worried that by the time I quit patches I will re-experience withdrawals again"  The actual physical withdraw will only last for a few days, so no need to worry about experiencing it twice. The MENTAL part of quitting will be with you for quite a awhile, with or without the nicotine in your system. Its just something you will need to deal with on your own terms. If you have the right mind set set it will be easier for you. If you think it will be hard, chances are it will be. If you think you will conquer it, chances are you will. Keep us updated with your progress okay?
Stay strong.

Hi Kal! First off let me say congrats on deciding to quit. I am using the nicotine patch program to quit and am on the last step of the 7mg patch. I actually found this worked best for me personally. I worked the entire program. For me the first few weeks were by far the most difficult, even with the patch. Breaking the habit of smoking was by far the most difficult aspect of  my quit. I can only speak from my own experience with using the patch, but in all honesty once I got through the first few weeks it became much easier. Moving down from 21mg to 14mg then to 7mg actually was much easier than I anticipated. One thing I needed to come to terms with was that smoking was a long time habit and in order for me to quit successfully I needed to make some life changes as well. I no longer could run to that cigarette to relieve stress or to just kill boredom. You are on the right track, remember your quit is one minute, one hour, one day at a time. Best of luck to you and keep us posted.

Good for you for reaching day 3!
Of course you can cut it back if you want to but why do you want to short cut it? It may not have the same potential for a successful quit. People do all sorts of things with NRTs but they say the prescribed method is best. Good luck on your journey. Keep us posted!

Hello, today is my 3rd day smoke free using Nicoderm 21 mg patches, I am supposed to take the 21 mg for 4 weeks then dose down to 14 mg for 2 weeks then 7mg for another 4 weeks. IS there anyway I can use 21 mg for two weeks then 14 mg for two weeks then 7 mg for two weeks?
