Steveo88, your post put a smile on my face this morning.  I love the idea of us coming back to life, or getting a whole new lease on life as you put it, after quitting smoking.  It sounds like you had a really lovely time of gratitude in action with your son :)

A friend got sick and myself last month felt like almost got a heart attack (luckily it was a false alarm) and my difficulty to breath also made me stick to quit.
Doctor's diagnosis found that those alarms caused by my sinusitis.
 
What I'm trying to share with you here, when you got a slight taste of death, then you know it's late already.
In my case I was considerably lucky, and I hell sure will never want to experience that again. 
Now everything seems perfectly clear, of why I must QUIT.
And I got a son to, who I still got plenty of wise stories to share with him - from his first day at school, the first music instrument to the first girlfriend and lady of his life.

What a great walk. I can smell the sea and the cows on the hill. Ran down a hill with my son just because we felt like it! I've got so much more energy. I didn't realise how my sense of smell had got so dull. This is a new lease of life. I went to my stop smoking group today and my lung capacity is already improving. Rewarding myself by planning a 2 week walk next year on southwest coast path. I feel great apart from the odd craving and coughing bout. What really made me stick to this quit? Seeing a friend with oxygen tank in a wheel chair. C o p d. Caused by smoking. Off to the beach for a walk. N o p e!!!!

Hi Stevo, I'm on day 4 and it gets a little easier everyday. Still get the "waves" and trigger spots, but am really trying to stay focused on quitting this time. I try to redirect my thoughts and wash dishes or sweep the back deck or something to keep busy. Taking that 1st puff would be my downfall and I know by reading all these comments I cannot take one puff in safety. Thanks for sharing your story we can do this together one day or one hour at a time.

Yay, welcome back!  You're wiser this time around and see the dangers of having "just one" or "just this one night."  Knowing that dirty little nicotine trick has saved me a multitude of times on this quit - as much as I would sometimes like "just one", I don't want the inevitable hundred that would follow. I don't want to be on Day 1 again.  I don't want to have to go through the first week again.  I don't want to have to find the motivation to quit again.  When I think things through to the end, then I see that ultimately smoking one just isn't worth it for me.  My nicotine-susceptible brain wiring sometimes tries to make me forget that there is life beyond the next 5 minutes. It is only concerned with right now, consequences be damned.  Learning to separate its "voice" from my own voice helps me to leave it in the dust.

It seemed so easy last time. 12 days and cruising. Then a night out and I'm smoking again. I can't even blame drink. I don't drink now. In my opinion I got to cocky and thought I had it beat. So its back to the beginning but with one advantage. I know what to expect! The patch is on already. They work. Unless you get stupid and relax like I did. One bloody drag and I'm smoking again. With the support and advice on this site I WILL be a non smoker from tomorrow.
