H.A.L.T.

Since no one is using this thread I thought I'd post some thoughts on it that might be helpful. The slogan H.A.L.T. is a powerful tool against relapse and especially helpful in the early days of the quit. It was and still is for me anyway. Hungry , Angry , Lonely or Tired. I blew a 6 week quit one time because I finished working night shift and stayed awake whereas if I had the good sense to go to sleep the outcome would have been more productive. The point is to not just pay lip service to these emotions because they can send us back smoking in a heartbeat. Don't let yourself get too H.A.L.T. Take care of yourself and don't allow yourselves to get too bent out of shape. I don't know about anyone else but in the early days I was like a firecracker waiting to blow up and needed to keep my emotions in check. Anyway I think H.A.L.T. is important. Excellent for you. breather
Good morning breather;
Thanks for posting this..

I feel like a firecracker at times too and need to pay attention to my basic needs.
Like H.A.L.T. suggests...Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired...

breather,

I so enjoyed reading your post!  Your words are encouraging and something to keep in mind during the difficult times.  You can apply your approach and outlook to many life situations beyond quitting smoking.

Eyja, I also like H.A.L.T.E.D.!  I will share this with other quitters!

Have a good night,

Why thank you Eyja & Vincenza. H.A.L.T. is a slogan that has circulated around Programs of recovery for at least 20 years that I know of. I remember it from a meeting I went to but it's anybodys that wants or needs to use it. I like H.A.L.T.E.D. as well. It's the human condition summed up. We keep the few slogans and tid-bits of information that work and leave the rest behind. I root for the underdog. Who cares about the sick and possibly dieing addict ? I do. Recovering addicts are by far the best people in my opinion. We've lost far too many people at a far too early age. We talk about what it was like , what happened and what it's like now. We share our experience , strength and hope. What worked and what didn't work. What works and what doesn't. If one person stops smoking because of what Eyja or Vincenza said then it's all worthwhile. The message is hope. The message is that anyone that truley has the desire to stop smoking can  stop and can stay stopped and can actually be happy about it. It's knowing that the storm will go away and the sun will shine again another day. We have nothing to F.E.A.R. if we Face Everything And Recover. So excellent for you newcomer because we can be smoke free and happy about it.

Thanks for adding this 'trigger acronym' to the board, Breather.  I don't know if it's one of your own great term inventions or if you happened on it and decided to share, but it's really true and is one I keep in mind if a trigger happens to rear its ugly head and makes me think it just may be OK to have 'a puff' now that I'm 'cured' of my addiction.  NOT!  I H.A.L.T. now when remembering to adhere to N.O.P.E.!  I've also found that I need to pay attention to my Excitement & Depression  triggers too - so I add these to you acronym to help cover those bases too.  I adhere to Not One Puff Ever and am ever vigilant for triggers like being Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, Excited and/or Depressed.  That way I'm pretty sure I've H.A.L.T.E.D. any chance for my junkie thinking to derail this Quit I have going on for nearly a year now!  Thanks also, for your many kind words of support and good ideas to help others quit too.  'Excellent for you' is a good way to put it! : ) Eyja

Hi breather,

Thanks for your post!   H.A.L.T. is right up there with N.O.P.E
It is a great reminder to check in with how you are feeling and what may be triggering those urges to smoke.
Have a great smoke-free day everyone.
