Smoking Spouse

Good Afternoon everyone, Hope this post finds everyone well and smoke free! 63 days under my belt today and a few pounds gone as well. Not a huge victory but with all the challenge's that my thyroid has been giving me lately I'll take that few pounds lost as a starting point of better things to come. Son's surgery went well and he's eyesight is better now. Thanks for asking V. I do have a question or concern. Since I have stopped smoking I have noticed that my throat seems sore. It's really not like a sore throat but kinda (I know that doesn't make sense). I'm a little concerned and will bring this up at my next doctor's appointment next month. I was just curious to see if anyone else had gone through this. Thanks again DonnaK

Hi DonnaK,

Congrats on your continued success in your quit! I imagine the past few days may have been more challenging considering your son's surgery.  Sounds like he has great support and I hope everything went smoothly!

Thanks for all the kind words working on it. 5 miles.....YOU GO GIRL! They would have found me laid out on the side of the road like road kill if I tried doing that. Yes 54 days smoke free. Oh there has been some days when smoking is all I have thought about but I've stayed on the path. I'm going to keep walking and may add some weight training for upper body. We shall see. Sorry for the short post my head is just not into posting today. You see my son is in surgery right now nothing serious just some eye issues. The waiting is the hardest part and I know he's in good hands but still I'm not right there to be by his side.

Congratulations on hanging in there, DonnaK! As of now, it looks like you've got 46 days under your belt. At 50 days, we like to say you are cruising, and you get to come up with all the fun stuff that you are doing on your imaginary cruise.

I have mixed feelings about the gym, as well. I generally hate my workout when I start, kind of accept it by the middle, and then really love the feeling I get when I'm done. It has also taken my a couple of years to get to the level of fitness I'm at. When I first started, my cardiovascular system was a lot weaker than it is now. I also still have lots of room to improve, even now.

...But the overall fitness routine has kind of become my new addiction. And knowing how intensely I'm able to work out and how good it can make me feel really helps me to stay away from the smokes. I can't imagine getting a decent workout at all with smoke and carbon monoxide running through my veins. In fact, it blows me away that I was able to do any exercise at all as a smoker. At one point about 10 years ago, I rode my bike 5 miles home from work every day as a smoker, and now I have no idea how that was possible. Just the thought of trying to do exercise with all that junk in my system sounds so nasty and difficult. I must have been one crazy, stubborn woman to keep on smoking while I did that, huh?

It's been a few days since my last post, and I thought I'd check in. Still smoke free and hubby is still alive and smoking. So all is right in my world? LOL I believe I shared with everyone my first reward that I gave myself was a membership to the Y. Well I've been going but I have to admit it isn't one of my favorite things to do. I'm slowly working exercise back in my life. I know better than jump in and try to much at one time plus I know me. That is the fastest way for me to get burned out so I'm up to 3 miles a day walking on the treadmill.

Not losing weight as fast as I would like and having thyroid issues hasn't helped but I'm trying. At least that is going to be my story at the next doctor visit. On the bright side my blood pressure is back to normal.

After 45 days I am still having sleeping problems. Thought for sure I'd have no problems after going to the gym and a nice warm shower afterwards, but just as soon as my head hits the pillow I'm wide awake. And no I don't have a whole lot of stress at work and I don't think I'm depressed.  Oh well this to shall pass hopefully soon.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads and to the single moms. Remember giving your kids a smoke free parent is the best gift you could ever give them and yourself. DK

OH DonnaK!

You took his bedroom TV away, huh? I'm loving your story more as it unfolds. LOL

And you are correct about the cravings. They get to be less and less as time goes on.

You go, girl!

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement. Yes Jim I am rebelling against the nicotine demon and to prove to my husband that I can do this. But most important I am doing this for ME. I am not a smoker!!! I will no longer let anyone or anything have control over my life. I had to get mad before I could see how much damage I was doing to my body. Rebelling has always been a strong suit of mine. My mother calls it being hard headed but for me I had to get pissed off.

The cravings are getting less and I don't think about smoking during the day as much. Now when I see someone light up I think how much time they have just took off their life. Prayer has also helped, a lot of prayers.........LOL and maybe my husband will see that he can do this too. He has stopped smoking around me and in the bedroom. Guess me taking the TV out helped........LOL you know sometimes you just have to take the bull by the horns. Good thoughts to all and God Bless.

Well said, Workin'!!!

I'd go as far to say that quitting is a full-time act of rebellion, which I have actually considered an act of war against the nico-demon!  It's a war we cannot afford to lose!  We have to do what it takes to win every battle and if we do that we win the war!    All the while we reap the spoils of being victorious in every battle with ever improving health and self confidence!!!

DonnaK,

You go, girl! Sometimes, quitting has to be an act of rebellion.

And congrats on the Y membership. You're going to love it.
