Want to Take a Small Step forward towards Quitting

10 years ago 0 1853 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Cary,

The first week is tough!!  You came to the right place to vent and seek help.  Take your mind off smoking by reading through the many forums and posts here.  Work through the program to learn other ways to beat the cravings.  What has helped you reach Day 5?  What else can you do to distract yourself?

Hi ashish,
When I first started trying to quit smoking this time I cut back on my daily cigarettes over a period of weeks and months, than I started using the nicotine gum but it didn't work for me, the patch give me nightmares, so I changed to the nicotine lozenges and used them for a while and finally I put all the nicotine down all the nicotine and went cold turkey. For me the nicotine addiction was strong and it was affecting my health. If I continued using these products I would have continued to have High blood pressure and I already had a stiff and enlarged heart from the high blood pressure. The day that I went in for surgery to remove a tumor from my kidney and later woke up from surgery was the day I Quit. I had trouble in surgery with my breathing and later in the hospital with my heart. I was very scared, in pain and could hardly breathe. So after that quiting was not so hard.

Believe it or not what I find the hardest is staying quit..I still get strong urges for cigarettes on most days or if stressed.  Even though nicotine and cigarettes almost killed me..I had a slip last week and guess what my blood pressure went through the roof again 165/100, so as you see for me Staying Quit is a matter of life and death..and it could be for you too if you keep smoking..I smoked for 43 years and some of the damage is irreversible. The sooner you quit the better.

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi ashish,

I went at my quit very slowly. It actually took me about 4 months from my first steps until my last cigarette. Part of that plan was me gradually reducing the number of cigarettes I smoked. I would cut back and then maintain for a couple of weeks before cutting back again. I also used nicotine lozenges, and I used them in a way that is not advised, so I don't want to advise that here. However, I will say this. I needed to do it in my own tedious, step-by-step way. The idea of quitting all at once was too scary for me. ...So go ahead and take whatever steps you need to take, just as long as you really take them.

Hi ashish,

The entire program here is an excellent way to get started. Have you had a chance to take a look at it? Any questions?

For me, part of the process was actually not having a plan. I was smoking like normal one night and then I got up the next morning and was just like "That was it." No big goodbye or ceremonial last smoke or anything like that. I actually still had some cigarettes in the house, and I didn't dramatically throw them away or anything, I just left them on the porch in case I changed my mind. By about three in the afternoon I was so deep into withdrawal that I knew I'd never want to go through that first eight hours again. I still didn't throw the cigarettes out, I just put them in a drawer to give to a friend. My mind was so made up that it didn't matter whether there were cigarettes in the house or not. I was a pretty serious smoker, too, like slightly more than a pack a day. You wouldn't think it would be that simple for someone like me but in the end it was.

Everyone is different, but I think in the past fixating on a "plan" actually just helped me procrastinate because there was always some step I was waiting to take before the only step that mattered, which was waking up in the morning and not smoking. For me it was about really being ready to commit to it, and I didn't plan when I would be, it just kind of happened.

That being said, just signing up here is a great first step! I came here a lot in the early days and ranted about all the things I was feeling and people were really supportive. It's nice knowing you're not alone and that other people have suffered through this stuff and survived.

I'm at 24 days now. Last night I spent the whole night outside grilling and drinking with friends and I thought about smoking maybe twice. It happens that fast, and you will be so glad you did it. Seriously. I want to run up to every person I see smoking and tell them how possible it is to quit. It is very possible! You can do it!

hi ashish!

not sure if i can offer the best advice because i used a nic patch for about 4 days and then just went cold turkey.  but the patch works for a lot of people to wean off nicotine gradually.  i know carol used nicotine gum and that was very helpful to her.  i also read alan carr's easyway (i didn't use the nicotine patch after i finished that book).

if you look up at the top of this page it says "my program"  - click on that... there is a lot of helpful info right there.

you made the most important step already by thinking about quitting!!
welcome to the forum!
