Smoked for 37 years!

Hello DebSoFlo,

Congratulations on your decision to Just Do It. My quit was similar, in the sense that I just started weaning off cigarettes one day. Also, I kind of let go of the nicotine replacement therapy at random/ not quite when I expected. Maybe it's better for some of us to just do it when we are ready.

As for advice, the best advice is to simply not smoke each day. make sure you are monitoring your own responses to the patches, especially at first. If you feel like you are getting too edgy and want to smoke, you may want to up your dosage. If you start to get weird dreams or get nauseated, it might be time to down the dose.

As for the mental battle, I'd say it's a good idea to check out the various subheadings under "My Program" and "Tools" at the top of this page. There are exercises in there to help you to mentally prepare/ adjust to the idea of quitting.

And remember to check in frequently. Feel free to brag and prance in the stats parade. Folks here know that this is a big hill to climb, and many will cheer you on as you do it.

Hello and welcome DebSoFlo. There are many success stories here including yourself. Anyone who is on their third day of not smoking is a success as far as I'm concerned. We stay smoke free by not smoking for a day at a time , an hour at a time , or if need be minutes at a time. When we add up all the days it turns into months and years. Read and learn here and post when need be. There are as many variations of quitting as there are people so do what works for you. Other members will be along to welcome you. Excellent for you for not smoking today. breather

I was just a kid trying to fit in and be cool. I forced myself to smoke even though it was disgusting to me. I got hooked. Addicted. Quit when I was pregnant. Smoked one the second I could get outside the hospital. Tried to quit at least ten times since. Failed. "I'll quit on my birthday" or New Years Day, my son's birthday, my anniversary, Christmas, when I find a job, but a house, lose weight etc. There is no magical, cosmic time to quit. So I just picked a random day and did it. I quit this past Monday. I'm using Nicoderm and will gradually wean off the nicotine. Yes, I'm having moments if difficulty. Trying to keep busy physically and mentally. This is probably one of the biggest challenges I've ever undertaken. I joined here to be accountable. I do not want to fail this time. And I'm scared. But hopeful. Any advice, recommendations, success stories or support you could share with me would be appreciated.
