What saved your quit?

17 years ago 0 2462 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Whether we are young or old in our quit, nearly all of us have at one time or at many times been strongly tempted to SMOKE JUST ONE. But something within us said STOP. And we didn't smoke that one. I have used mantras and affirmations in my quit...Smoking is not an option for me anymore. I can and will get past this. One is too many and a thousand is not enough. What made you STOP AND THINK? What kept you from losing your quit? Thanks all of you for your responses. I also remember thinking that I might not have another quit in me...if I didn't do it now, I would never do it. So I gritted my teeth and pushed on through. To me, smoking is a very deliberate act; there a lot of built in points in which to stop yourself if you choose to. You have to actively GO to a store to buy them which involves standing in line and pulling out your wallet, getting out money, having an exchange with the cashier. At any time you can say (or scream) "NO" and turn away. Sure you may look like a freak doing that outloud or suddenly changing your mind but who cares. Then if you still go through with the purchase you have to open the pack, pull out the smoke, put it to your mug and fumble with a lighting utensil. Each of these steps offer a way out if you remain conscience of what you are doing. Even if you smoke one, you still have the rest of the pack staring at you. All that to say, I played out that scenario MANY times my first two weeks. I knew that if I had a pack in my hands I would smoke the whole thing. Then I'd buy another and be right back to square one. For me it would never be just one or just a drag - if I bought 20 then I would smoke 20. It seems to have worked ;p Great topic Rusty.
