Rock, This is kind of similar. I could be friends with these people if I smoked even thought they are non smokers.  Once I told them I was quiting smoking they started throwing it in my face that I was quiting smoking. They were not supportive at all.  I thought they would be happy for me.  If I felt a little anxious or depressed or was not what they wanted me to be it was because I quit smoking. They asked me to leave the group and come back when I was all better. This really hurt me.  I actually felt much better without the nicotine and thought I was better.  You would figure people would be happy for you because you quit smoking, go figure.  Anyway I am very happy to be a ex smoker I would never take up smoking again for anybody.  I like the new me even if they don't.  I do think if you are quitting smoking it helps a lot to have a group like this of supportive people who really care and don't blame everything that happens on your lack of nicotine.

Actually the people and group I am having to leave behind is not a group of smokers or ex smokers.  They are just a on line group that I have outgrown and no longer feel comfortable with.  I am finding that some groups and people just don't work out for me now that I am a ex smoker.  I do not think weather they are smokers or not has anything to do with is for me.  I think it has to do with wanting to be around positive people that really care about their fellow man. Thats pretty much it for me. Now that I have removed the nicotine from my body and can think more clearly.  I think I am seeing things as they really are and I want different things out of life now. Thats all.

Rose, one of the things that I noticed when I quit was that the only thing I had in common with several "friends" was smoking.  You know, the people you talked to every day on smoke breaks.  Once I quit, I found that there really wasn't anything to our friendship.  I was a bit sad at first, but when I realized that the only way we would be "friends" again would be if I smoked I said it's not worth it!  The good thing was that I immediately made new friends with healthy common interests!  I'm sure you will also make some new, wonderful friends now that you are not smoking!  By the way, those 19 smoke free days are looking great on ya!

Hi Rose.  I was very lucky when I quit that most of my friends and coworkers do not smoke and most of them never have.  It was easy for me to work my way into "non smoker" groups that way, however I did have some of those same issues.  I did (and still do) try to remind myself that most smokers that I know want to be non smokers, they just have not been able to do it yet.  Maybe you can start a whole new group and others may just follow your lead!
Keep up the good work!  :)

Excellent observations, Rose!  You are becoming aware of the new you.  Be proud!!!!!  I preferred to focus on the new opportunities that were available as a non-smoker.  Yes, I miss some of the smoker-circle crowd....but I was introduced to an entirely new circle of friends and colleagues that can help strengthen the freedom fight from nicotine....AND provide helpful insight on healthy activities and choices rather than the self-destructive circle of smoke!!!!  Enjoy your ride!!!  You are doing great!!!!!!

Keep the Quit,

Dave

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

I am finding that if I want to stay quit I can never go back to my old life, my old way of thinking, my old friends, or old groups.  I tried to go back to a old group today and it was just not working for me anymore, I didn't feel like I belonged anymore and the group kind of made me feel bad.  Like a stranger in a strange land.  I think that maybe I have just out grown this old group.  I have changed and am moving forward with my life, there is really no turning back now.  Has anyone else felt this way?  Happy and Sad at the same time kind of bitter sweet?
