Hi Dawn and welcome - I just quit 4/9 and smoked approx. 35 yrs.  I was an outside smoker for the last 30 years and I smoked in MY car.  Can identify with it being hard driving and not smoking.  It is a excellent idea to clean out your car and hopefully get most of the smell of smoke out.  Also the deep breathing is helping me alot and I'm sucking on crushed ice and drinking alot of water.  I've used patches, gum, smoking cessation classes at the local hospitals, shots and a few years ago used Chantix (I did quit for about 7 months) but had a lot of side effects from the Chantix:therefore I'm going the cold turkey route this time and I'm doing quite well so far.
Please consider your age and the length of time you've smoked while quitting - the longer you smoke the harder it is and the more damage you do to your lungs-your picture indicates you are a beautiful young woman-please consider the damage the smoking does to your skin, hair and health.
Congratulations on setting that quit date and becoming a quitter-we have lots of people to support us and encourage us with our journey in this group.

Dawn, welcome to the SSC and congrats on your decision to quit smoking!  Great idea on cleaning out your car!  While you are at it, wash your clothes too before wearing them since they may still smell like smoke!  Toss out every ashtray, every lighter, everything that you used!  If you used to smoke in the same spot, rearrange furniture.  If you smoked while drinking coffee, switch to tea or something else.  You just need to psych out the nicodemon these first couple weeks, one day at a time!  And don't forget about rewards.  Something small for each passed craving.  A medium reward for each smoke free day, and a larger reward for each smoke free week.  Now that its spring, my favorite daily reward is taking my dog for a nice walk!  We both get exercise, we get to breathe fresh air, and we get to do it all smoke free!  We're all rooting for your continued success!

Hi Dawn and welcome. I quit too using the patches, I thought they were terrific and worked for me. Of course the first few days are a bit bizarre, but they soon settle and the quit does become easier day by day.
You are young enough Dawn to minimise the damage by quitting now-I am afraid there was no one around to advise me and I smoked for many many years, now, I am paying the price, with chronic lung and breathing problems. So, keep going, stay positive and I look forward to hearing how it goes.

Hello Jim!

Thank you so much!  I feel like I can breathe better already, aside from the lollipops and straws, breathing exercises are helping at times.  I am still at work right now, the drive home and at home will be the hardest.  There is no smoking done inside the house at least.  There just won't be any porch visits for me.  Love the kick the ash comment!  That idea helps alot.  Thank goodness the car is mostly leather, but still smelly at the moment.

Have a great afternoon,

Dawn

Hey Dawn!!!

Welcome to the SSC!!!  Congratulations on your decision to quit!  Going through the milestones in the program will assist you in continuing your preparation for this journey.  Also, stick close the first few days/weeks and read and learn from the posts in the forums!  There is a wealth of information here and the search function works really well!  You may want to use the forums, reading and chatting with your new quit buddies, as a distraction like many of us did in the beginning of our quits!  My thinking was that if I was here, I wasn't smoking!!!

Try keeping a Positive Mental Attitude going through this!!!  It is a LOT easier being positive, getting along and trying to make it a happy experience than it is being the opposite!  Keep telling yourself that you  CAN  do this and just take it one day at a time.  If necessary, take it a minute or an hour at a time.  When that nico-demon calls just tell him NOPE (Not One Puff Ever)!!!  Take charge and kick ash!!!

BTW...  great idea...  cleaning the car!  Fabreze will help on the upholstery!

           Jim

Hi Dawn,

Welcome to our wonderful online support community and congratulations on making the decision to quit smoking! You have come to the right place to receive knowledge, support and encouragement to help you make this quit stick! The first week of your quit will definitely be the most challenging. We call the first week of your quit "hell weel" because during this first week the cravings are most intense. Keep in mind that with time it will get easier and the cravings will taper off.  Keep working hard and post often!

You sure can! Welcome, indiasmommy1. You are doing it. All you have to do to quit smoking is not smoke. Simple, but not easy. If you haven't already, you might want to get a quit kit together: veggies, ice water, sugar-free gum and candy. Be careful of the fruits. They contain sugar. The water helps flush toxins out of your system and speeds up metabolism. So that we can celebrate your milestones with you setup your stats. Go to 'My Profile' and 'Support Group Options' near the top of the page and enter the info.
