Rd Man The Quit and all the Stories

18 years ago 0 2614 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I just posted this in a wake up call thread and I would like it here in this threadas well. Although I have bumped this (the What was your wake up moment thread) several times I have never told my story. My wake up call happened at the dentist last October as he was removing a moral that had died, just died. It was a big thing for me. The dentist asked me to quit and I was able to quit for most of 36 hours and I was a mess. I had tried to quit a couple of years ago and around the 30 day mark I got dizzy and had a lot of feeelings that I was unable to deal with. Two years before, I had tried to quit after caring for my sister as she died of metastatic breast cancer, she never smoked a day in her life. Her death scared me, I looked into my family health history, many of my uncles on both sides of my family died of lung cancer or heart disease. I have seen people wasting away in hospital and cared for them as they died of non smoking related disease. he thought of my death in so vulnerable a way from a smoking related disease, that I was responsible for jarred my deep sleep. If that tooth could die just like that I was sure that I could die as well. My own mortality hit me and I woke up, in a panic mind you. I spent several months preparing for my quit. Finally in February I was ready. I did do it, I stuck to my guns and I quit. It is one of the hardest things that I have ever done and is also one of the most rewarding. Phillip. Todays Date: 3/21/2006 My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 32 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 648 Amount Saved: $240 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 6 Mins: 55 Seconds: 11 That date keeps on getting higher! The number of dollars increases! AND I feel terrible. I have felt terrible for a couple of days now. I had a very social weekend and did very well. Monday I had lots of stuff to do and I did hardly any of it. I don't think that it is so much that I crave the momentary rush the tobacco gave me. What I crave is how the tobaccoo had my mind totally altered every second of the day. As part of feeling terrible, I am dizzy, my mouth tastes metallic and my body feels feverish, I burst into a sweat at a seconds notice. My addict brain says that if I smoked this would go away. My rational brain says this is just how you are feeling and the smoking would mask all of this and you most likely would feel even less. I know that my breathing is better and yet I feel congested, it just so happens that it is clear sunny and cold out for those of you in the south cold is minus 5 celsius, I walk the dog three times a day and I respond to that. The metallic taste is another thing and eveny my jelly beans or the hard candy I eat are not tasting so great. I know this to will pass. When, I don't know, and it will pass. I know that I won't smoke. I know that I will absolutely stay in my power and I will be in control. I know that if I give over to some other force, wishing, hoping, praying, I will be giving up on myself and I will no longer have full control. Right now I need to stay in complete control of what I do, how I behave. Knowing all the while that I can not control what my body does or does not do, i.e. all the weird symptoms. I know they are symptoms of withdrawl or not pumping the nicotine into me, and going to the doctor will happen. I know though that this time I will not need to go through the barrage of tests to find out I am dizzy. So if it works for me to take a nap I will and if it works to drink a gallon of water a quart of orange juice I will. I simply will not smoke because I know exactly how that DOES NOT work for me. Right now it works to come here post and read. I know that it sounds like whinning and I know that I need a pla

Part of where I am today: UGH! Post Thread This is day 33. Todays Date: 3/22/2006 My Quit Date: 2/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 33 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 669 Amount Saved: $247.5 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 10 Mins: 53 Seconds: 18 I really am feeling very dizzy, and really like I am just going to sleep all day. Knowing that that is not possible. Finding out how I can be gentle with myself and find a different way to get through the day. The posts seem so relevant to me this morning. The mouth stuff, the dizzy stuff, the 30 day pit stuff, Rob47 stay strong. My mouth being a metallic, dry waste. I need to go and get the french bottled water it does not have the same taste as the stuff from the grocery store or cr**py tire. No blisters or sores inside and I think that if I drink lots of water and cut back on the acidic/caffine I will do well. There is one new thing. Swimming I am going to put off until tomorrow. That swimming thing is just to much and I really feel tired today. The sweating thing. Calling just as soon as I deliver this post, naking a DR appointment, I know that he will not be able to say anything other that this is a bit of nothing and I want his reassurance that this really is a bit of nothing,. That puts the sweating, fatigue, dizzyness into one more item dealt with. I know though that this is the place in the quit that is for me the hardest and it is the place that I have fallen the last two times. Both times 2000, and 2003 these symptoms came up and I caved. I can stand firm in my resolve and know that I can do different this time and I can know I won't cave. How do I know this, I have set this site up as a huge place for accountability, that's right, right here, right here in River City! That I can come here, post, post even the bad stuff and this group of dedicated quitters is right here with me, well it is just the absolute ideal of what group therapy is meant to be. AND the cost is my giving my word, my being honest, truthful and very open right here. So there are all those little chores all tidy all bunched up like so much laundry off to the cleaners, (if only it were so simple), and it really is that simple it is jus

Wow, Riverdale Man, you're having a complete body overhaul! Good for you. And to think I was excited when I cleaned out my car and washed my windows. lol. Seriously though I go in April to get my 6 month cleaning, and I am sooo looking forward to telling her that I am a NON-SMOKER!! (I hate cleanings, I always get my mouth frozen for it.) You're right , you certainly don't want to start all over again, and I know you won't screw up your 18 day quit. Keep Strong. Hey Riverdale Man. I hope you had a great walk with your hound dog. I have a hound too, she's a beagle. You know what dogs and this site have in common? You can be as cranky as you want with both and you will never be let down. Let us know how you're doing, for good or bad. Hey Phillip, Look at you with your 50 days!! That's awesome!! Time sure flies when you're havin' fun doesn't it? Glad to hear you sounding so positive about yourself today. You deserve to feel great, you've worked so hard at this. I'm with you on the gardening for a reward. Nothing makes me happier than digging around in my flower beds. Hubby and I were just discussing what we will do with the yard this year. I think we're going to add on to our deck. And the best thing of all, is I'll be able to chip in some money for it too. I'm off to work now, but wanted to give you a shout out on your huge milestone!!! You're doing great, eh!!!
