me and one of my closest friends coicidently quit on basically the same day, he quit the day after me. We had told eachother we will quit in the winter in August. I lent him a book to read the  Allen Carr one. We check in with eachother almost everyday. I just moved from where he still lives. It is nice to have someone going through the same stuff with you and encourage you and vice versa. I am glad we dont live to too close now because it would be hard if he started up again for me a bit, but I know I would still make it through. We have yet to get together and hang out smoke free since we both quit but we are planning to play tennis smoke free this time. We are both into physical activity with eachother its nice to know we both took some healthy steps to improving our physica health together. My aunt also quit two years ago as far as I know she is still quit I will see her on xmas eve and shell be happy that i stopped

Brenda,

It is good to hear that many your family members are quitting smoking. Stick with your quit and keep showing the rest of your family members how great it is to be smoke-free. NOPE!

How has your family helped you with your quit?

Members, how do you cope with being around family members who smoke?

My step father quit a few years ago because of lung problems.  Had an uncle who passed away of lung cancer a few years back (he smoked till he died).  Actually, no one in my circle recently quit but I'm hoping that my quit will give them hope and they will at least think about quitting :o)  .

Did any influence you?

So many of my relatives have quit or are trying to quit that it played a major role in my decision and probably my ability to quit. My aunt and cousin quit five years ago. They did so via the church. They also had other addictions that they gave up at the same time. My sister quit and two of my brothers have. They just quit. (I have a third brother who really is just a social smoker, but his circle is shrinking. Larry only smokes when he party's and he rarely party's. He's 51 now. I don't know how he has always been able to smoke for a few hours and then stop until the next party.)  Two cousins have quit and at least two cousins are trying. We may become a smoke-free family at some point, because the nonsmokers definitely outnumber the smokers. The smokers get a little card table on my aunt's enclosed back porch to smoke. Funny, but generally the smokers are also the drinkers, although I wasn't a drinker. It does help to have so any people trying or quitting. It's contagious. I saw the accomplishments and wondered how someone who chained smoked and/or smoked for nearly 55 years or smoked and did crack can give those things up while I was struggling to just give up smoking, but it just strengthened my resolve, because I wanted to join them. My relatives asking me to quit also helped. Until they asked I didn't think anyone cared.

Outside of religion, self-esteem for me, money is the overriding factor that is causing people in the family to quit. Cigarettes in Chicago range from about $8.00 to $12.00/pack, depending on where you buy them. However, the media reported recently that Cook County is loosing a lot of cigarette tax revenue because people are buying cigarettes out of state and a lot of black market selling is going on. For the last six months before I quit, a friend of mine was shipping my smokes to me monthly from Kentucky. That did break me of the habit of going to the store to buy cigarettes. However, I began to realized that I couldn't afford to spend any amount of cigarettes. Plus, I was just so sick and tired of smoking.
