Slipping up!

Barbie, I know what you mean about social environments, alcohol has not been a problem at all for me but being with a group of people whether it's family (because they make me crazy) or a group of friends was very hard for me.  At the beginning of my quit I had to walk away.
Last weekend I had an 80th birthday party for my mother and had friends and family in from Ohio and PA, I was really worried how I would handle it, I prayed and I prayed and I had a wonderful time.  Amazingly out of approx 40 adults there were only 2 smokers and we banished them to the outside!

Hang in there and remember all the reasons that you have for quitting and don't forget N.O.P.E.

My Milage:

My Quit Date: 9/9/2009
Smoke-Free Days: 42
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,680

Slips are usually just a few puffs. It's fairly easy to get back on the wagon after a slip. Relapses involve all your old behaviors and are harder to recover from. The fact that you signed on here shows slips because you haven't given up.

Now for this weight thing.  Most people struggle a little with their weight when they quit smoking, but most are also able to get the weight off later. I was told by my doctor and nutritionist that a person would have to gain about 70 lbs to be in the same shape they were in while smoking.

My Quit Date: 5/1/2009
Smoke-Free Days: 173
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,844

Hey Barbie!!!

Welcome to the SSC!!!  Do stick close, read and learn from your fellow quit buddies here on the forums!  There is a wealth of information on virtually any subject related to quitting here and the search function works quite well!  Also, it was mentioned to go through all the milestones in the Program... essential!!!  Keep that list of reasons why you are quitting right in front of you for the next couple of months and read it when a strong craving hits!  Avoid triggers at all costs!!!  Heck, I didn't even go to a bar for six months after I quit, but I did have a beer as reward for making it through the day smoke-free!

It appears from your first post that you have those nasty cancer sticks available to you somewhere...  GET RID OF THEM!  And if you are out with your smoking friends, tell them right up front that you quit smoking and not to EVER offer you one!  Remove the ashtrays from your house, too!

Remember if a real strong craving starts, come here and post for help!!!  Wait for 5 replies and by that time your craving will be gone.   You will also be stronger for resisting the nico-demon one more time!  Take it one minute, one hour, one day at a time and keep telling yourself that you  CAN  do this!!!  A Positive Mental Attitude will really help you through this!!!

         N. O. P. E.  =   Not  One  Puff  Ever!  We're only 1 puff away from a pack a day!

You will be OK Barbie! Look at the bright side - now you know one of your major triggers, and know that you need to stay away from it for a little while. The first two weeks I stayed glued to this site (still am, more or less) and got all the support I could from other people success stories. Read the blogs - there are a few quite inspirational. It is a big re-assurance for me to see that other people go through the same struggles, frustrations and that eventually it does get better...
Keep up the quit!
Cristina

Hey Barbie- welcome to SSC- yes, most of us girls will identify with what you're saying, and weight gain was an issue for me too- however, as Christinas rightly says, a few pounds gained is far better than all the negative health issues associated with smoking. And even though I did gain weight, as soon as I felt able to re channel my energies into dieting I soon got those excess pounds off.
Barbie the first few days are difficult, and if you feel cutting down your smokes is the way towards a total quit then go for it- thats the way I did it, I gradually reduced my cigs down and down until Iquit completely substituting the cigs with a patch. Anyway toward a total quit is great and I wish you every success-

My Milage:

My Quit Date: 5/10/2008
Smoke-Free Days: 528
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,200
Amount Saved: $7,920.00

Gidget (Barbie) there are 4,593,396,201 excuses why you think you need a cigarette. But there is only one way to quit and that is to stop smoking. What excuse do you need to get back into your quit? How about the fact that the cigarettes are slowly killing you? They cause cancer, they cause emphasema, they cause COPD, which of those diseases will you get from smoking? This may be tough love, but you have to make the committment if you want to quit. The weight gain is temporary. Nicotine is as addictive a drug as heroine, or cocaine, or what have you. You have to realize that your body need to detox from the drug. You have to realize that you are a nicotine addict. Keep on trying, don't give up, start over, do whatever it takes to get yourself quit. This place is a great place to be for quitters!

Welcome Barbie!

Begin by reading through the program. Also, set up a rewards system.  Post and read often in the forums.  This will be a tough journey but it is well worth it!

What will be your first reward?

Hey Barbie,
Look at that. We quit on the same day!!!
I know exactly what you mean - my body is still pretty non-responsive... but I keep on going. I am trying to exercise and watch what I'm eating - to no avail for now... But you know what? I considered the benefits versus the losses... and chose to stay with the quit. Worse case scenario, I'll deal with the weight later. Reset your meter, take another deep breath, put the cigs down... and never look back! How about that for a kick ash attitude...lol. Honestly, is do-able. And I have been the worse smoker...
Bet you can do it!
