Right on! I was told by my dietitian and doctor that I'd have to gain at least 70 lbs to end up in the same shape I was in when I was smoking. 70 pounds, people!

I think that if we can quit smoking , eating healthier and excercising is a piece of cake lol!
And it is easier to take one thing at a time. And quitting smoking is the most important!
I also struggled in my previous quits worrying about the weight gain. And this time I forgave myself for the wieight gain.So far so good. I just excercised more to compensate for the slower metabolic rate.
And right now I am at my prequit weight and feeling great.
Thanks a lot for your encouraging news!!!

Mr Q, good stuff! Thanks for sharing! I am also working on losing the weight I've gained since I quit. Low Sugar Oatmeal has become one of my best friends! And those baby carrot sticks too! But I still allow myself that cheeseburger/slice of pumpkin roll/slide of pizza once a week to reward myself! Then I'll walk for an hour!
P.S. You should have some additional exercise now keeping up with your new son Jack! Is he walking yet? Driving yet?

Q, this is one hell of a post. Good on yer lost 20 lbs. I can echo sentiment with the ability to breathe better...doubling up stairs and climbing escalators here, it's a whole new life. I'd personally rather have a pot belly than black lungs but that's just me. Cheeseburger, anyone?

I wanted to post this for the newbies because I know this is a common fear when you quit. Weight Gain. Now quitting smoking doesn't make you gain weight but it does make food taste a lot better and for some this can be bad. When I quit I ate a lot to cope with the cravings and gained about 30 pounds.
I'm posting this because even if you start to notice some changes don't panic. The amount of energy and health you acheive by not smoking will allow you to target this battle as well. For instance when I smoked I couldn't go 20 feet without feeling at least a little out of breath. Now I am able to walk my entire lunch hour.
Starting about 3 months ago I started making some drastic changes in my eating habits and exercising a lot more often. I have now lost 20 of the 30 pounds and am still going strong.
Now why do I post this in this forum instead of the weight loss forum? Well, because I know it's hard to watch yourself put on a few extra pounds and for some it can tip the scale to the point where you lose your quit so I feel it's important to understand this up front.
So if you can quit smoking while eating tons of fruit and vegatables and walking your behind off quite literally than power to ya. If your like me and needed to suck down cheeseburgers to pass the cravings understand that in the long term you can quit smoking and use your new found energy to get back to your desired weight.
To all you new folks out there keep up the great work. Quitting maybe one of the hardest things you'll ever do but when you do it you will find it's also the most rewarding things you've ever done as well. All the best.
