Well this does happen every now and then....even for those of us who have been quit long term.  I get a craving maybe once a year, and yes it does surprise me but no longer bothers me.  I just know I don't want to go back to smoking so the thought pops into my head and then leaves again.  What you have to guard against is making a big thing of it and saying "it's not fair that others can smoke and I quit so I can't" (junkie thinking)..."maybe I could just have one" (junkie thinking) etc.  KILL THE THOUGHT RIGHT THERE!  Do not allow yourself to get into a spiral of junkie thinking....which I'm sure you didn't Mike - sounds like you did absolutely the right thing!

Mike, I'm so glad you scored a 100% on the exam!  A+++++  Isn't it amazing how that dirty little devil pokes his head out at us, trying to draw us back, even after a couple hundred days smoke free?  As you probably know, I travel almost every week for work.  Most cities I go to are smoke free, but ocassionally I stay in a smoking city (e.g. Atlanta).  For me, the nicodemon tries to pull me back with the triggers, the memories, the "oh yeah, I sat on the patio, had a couple smokes, a couple drinks, a nice dinner, etc.".   But I tell him I will make new memories drinking on the patio, having a nice dinner, but I will remain SMOKE FREE!!!!!  You taught me to say N.O.P.E. every day.  Its the best advice ever!

Yo Mike!!!

I'll be thinking about this thread next week while I'm away conferring with my fellow glassblowing wizards!  I also encountered a tough trigger last year at my conference and had to slap that tar-faced ugliness into submission!  I'm hoping that the little sucker learned his lesson last year and keeps his distance this year!!!

You know, you and I have been preaching that same thing over and over to everyone for quite a while now!!!  Just when you think that there is no way that you could ever face another trigger like the early days, BAM ... sneak attack by the 'ol nicodemon!!!

So, yes folks...  DO NOT let your guard down at any time!!!   NOPE!!!

        You done good, buddy!!!

Mike- just had the same thing happen to me. It was a test. I am so glad I passed, and I am glad you did not give in as well.
I really had myself convinced for a couple of minutes that I could buy a pack and just have one and then throw it away.
Although I have been so determined with this quit, that damn demon showed me that he can come back any time.A momentary lapse of reason will lead to starting it all over. Stay strong- keep the quit.
Tim

As with any addiction is patient and is will to wait.  You found that out, but you had to desire to remain smoke free and came though it with another life's lesson learned.  It always got me, but not this time.  Thanks for sharing the important reminder, it is one day at a time.

Keep the Quit

Glad to hear you were able to resist temptation.  Those are the times that got me in my last few failures.  Those out-of-the-blue/I-thought-I-could-handle-it moments.  All it takes is one, and then you're slip-sliding away!  Good for you for warding the nicodemon off!

here is a reminder to all of us , and i'm mainly preaching to myself.
this weekend was great , my wife and i traveled to north texas for her aunt's 80th birthday party.  we enjoyed our simple country hotel room , the local dienrs , etc. took in some fun old country city sights.

we got back to houston sunday night so monday afternoon i went by to see some buddies of mine at the local neighborhood sports bar and WHAM !

after a few beers i was tempted to bum a smoke from one of the guys there.

now i'm happy to report that i did not do it , i didn't even touch one , but i haven't had that craving in months and it snuck up on me.

i guess my point is , be careful , guard your quit. after being here at this website for over 14 months i was prepared on what to do when an urge came up. but i thought i was completely out of the woods and i now know i'm not.

the good news is though i did kick that nico-demon right in the teeth when he tempted me.

we have to stay strong for each other here.
