Giving this my best shot! Day 1

Hello buggerdb  Good that you've decided to do this. I , like you decided to stop cold turkey. I bought a box of patches at some point in my quit just in case but never used them. The box is still in the cupboard. I must not be like everyone else because the first couple days were easy but after that boy did the craves knock me over. I decided that whatever it was going to take I was going to go through it and tuff it out. It was nice to know that if things got really bad I could put on a patch to get some releif without having to smoke. I can only tell you what worked for me. Read the posts and if you come away with 1% that you can use take the 1% and leave the rest. Two things that really helped me were cold or ice water and Allen Carr's book " The Easy Way To Stop Smoking ". I'm actually reading this book again to affirm my quit. So welcome and there will be others along shortly with good advice. Remember what it was like when you weren't smoking ? It can be that way again. You won't need luck if you follow a few simple suggestions. You're the most important person here. Thanks for keeping me smoke free today. breather 140 Addict 0

Buggerdb, you've come to the best place!  I also quit cold turkey.  I went through "my program" so I was 110% prepared for whatever the nicodemon threw my way.  Preparation is key to a successful quit!  Set up a reward system to celebrate each passed craving (small reward), each smoke free day (medium reward), and each smoke free week (larger reward).  For my daily reward, I brew a pot of flavored coffee!  I also take my dog for a walk each night.  Its good exercise, I get to take in all the smells of spring, and I can walk up hill without getting out of breath!  Drink lots of iced water.  Have healthy snacks to use as a diversion like carrot sticks, pretzel sticks, celery, pickles, straws, anything that keeps your hands busy!  Read, read, and read some more!  Use the search feature here to look up topics affecting your quit.  Just take this one day at a time, using your knowledge of what works and what doesn't work.  We're all rooting that this will be your final quit!

Decided that today would be my quit day.  I have quit once before, stopped for a couple years, and returned.  Been smoking again for around 2 years.  I got a wake up call from the doctor today due to my breathing.  Also, since I have a chest infection, and I feel that I can conquer this the same way that I did when I actually quit a few years ago, that this may be a really good attempt at it.  This time I am going at it cold turkey, unless I decide on going to a NRT if the withdrawl becomes too bad.  My last quit a few years back, I was only on a patch for a few weeks, and was starting to get sick on them, so I stopped.  I need positive encouragement, hoping I can get that here.

My Quit Date: 3/31/2009
Smoke-Free Days: 0
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0
Amount Saved: $0.00
