Hi AmyK- I also did the cut down prior to the 'big' quit. I cut down from 30 a day to 8 and then to 5- however, I realised towards the end of the cut down period my allowance was starting to creep back up and I knew it would only be a matter of time before I was back up to 30.
I do believe thought that cutting down did help reduce my addiction to nicotine, but the waiting between smokes was far far harder than the actual quit.
When I eventually did put my first patch on I think I may have had more nicotine from the patch than I had been having on the cut down and therefore did not find my total quit too difficult.
I do hope you find a way to help you quit- 30 years is a long time to have been a smoker, I know as I was one for 37 years and even though I have quit now I know there will be health related repercussions eventually but then I only have myself to blame.

Hi Amy,

Welcome alot of good advice and support comes from here.  I smoked for 42 years and was in the top 1 percent of heavy smokers.  Using this program and all the support from alot of the people here I haven't had a smoke in 8 days was tough at first but it's getting easier.

The preperation I couldn't wait to get started.  I was going to wait until I go home in February but decided with the help from the people here I would give it a go early.  So now I'm looking at going home with over a month smoke free.

Some good advice so far.  Especially go through the my program it really educates you and helps.  Read alot of the post here.  I have read and read them and then read some more.   The Alan Carr book that was already mentioned alot of people have talked about it.  My wife ordered it for me which I won't see till I get home in February but I still want to read it.

Just remember your not alone just come here and ask questions or ask for help.  Especially when you are ready to quit.

Amy, welcome to the SSC!  I've read that it takes the average smoker 7 tries to become a non-smoker.  For some people, a gradual quit works.  For others, going cold turky works.  Others use a NRT like Chantix, gum, or patches.  Whichever way you chose to quit, the key to a successful quit is preparation!  Why don't you go through all of the questionaires under "my program" so you can be prepared.  Set up a reward system to celebrate your milestones.  Read, read, and read some more!  Angie is right that some people here have quit earlier than they planned.  They cut way back and the momentum kept going until they stopped smoking.  I agree that this would be a nice present for you!  We're all rooting for your success!

Hi amyk!  You've come to the right place.  My advice, keep doing the prep work and keep trying to cut back.  There's a strong possibility that in doing this you will get tired of preparing for your quit and just quit.  I noticed that a few people have posted that this has happened to them.  And most people try numerous times before their quit sticks.  Don't be hard on yourself.  Just keep moving forward.

Hello amyk You're not the only one that's tried to quit and failed. I spend a lot of time on this site reading and posting. Things that are instrumental in quitting and staying quit are this site , reading Allen Carr's book , the easy way to quit smoking , You can still smoke while you read it , determination not to smoke , patience and a sense of humour. Hi everyone,
 
I have tried to quit before and failed.  I have been smoking for 30 years!  The last few weeks
I have cut down from 20 cigs a day to 13 a day.  This week I was supposed to go down to 10
but still at 13.  I am hoping to quit by March 5, which would be a nice present for myself.
Any advice?
