PM Accupunture

14 years ago 0 916 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Kathaleen
I had used acupunture as a mean of relaxation. It has worked. But as far as quitting, I don'tknow. This is a mental addiction and I think that a 100% commitment has to be made.
My educated guess is that acupunture can relieve stress asociated with the quitting process. I don't know this is just plain rambling on my part.
I have used acupunture for other things, not to quit smoking!
Keep the quit

PM, back when I was smoke-free for 3 years, I used acupuncture. I don't really know if it medically helped, but it mentally helped. I've thought about going back and using it for quitting smoking and weight issues.

I have tried acupuncture, however not for the reasons of quitting smoking. It is relatively painless, and did make me feel more relaxed. However, there is no clear evidence that acupuncture is effective for smoking cessation. Though, in saying this, it has  been found that acupuncture may affect a person's smoking addiction by reducing their taste of tobacco/smoking and their desire to smoke. My belief is that every body is different. It could be all in your mind set, and also the environment in which acupuncture takes place is often very soothing and relaxing, so that may play a factor in it as well.
It would be interesting to hear others opinions on this.

Members, have any of you tried acupuncture? What did you think? Did it help with your quit?

kathaleen61,

In terms of acupuncture: acupuncture and acupressure are based on the Asian science of connections in the body. Nerve endings located near the surface of the skin are said to be connected to certain organs and functions in your body. Pins are inserted (acupuncture) or pressure is applied (acupressure) to these strategic points on the body. The procedure is relatively painless, and may help with relaxation and withdrawal symptoms.

In regards to your lack of concentration, you may be feeling an indistinct but annoying symptom that is linked with carbon monoxide withdrawal. It gives a sense of being in "another dimension." It can include changes in distance and space perception, a floating feeling, and a total lack of concentration. Remember that carbon monoxide is a deadly poison - it is a good thing to get out of your system. How long will this last? The first few weeks after quitting.

Tips to help: Plan your workload to account for your temporary lack of concentration. Avoid additional stress during the first few weeks.
If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.

Hope this helps. Hang in there!

How effective was accupunture? I've been smoking 30 yrs. (last 5 outside only) and I can't stand the thought of going out side and freezing one more year! I started Wellbrutrin last week and have cut my smoking to 10 a day. Next week I'm going to try 5 a day. If accupunture will helps much I'll consider it. I've tried many times to quit, (cold turkey, patch, gum, pill). I've gotten rid of 2 of the 3 biggest reasons I smoked. (depression and anxiety) but the 3rd one is much harder. Hypoglemicia (low blood sugar) . I did research and found out smoking gets your blood sugar up in a matter of seconds. Where as eating sugar or protein as short or takes forever to bring my body sugar up! I hated the lack of concentration this withdrawl brings. I can't think, work on a computer or drive when I quit.

Hello PM,

How are you doing today? How did your acupuncture session work out for you?

Acupuncture involves inserting tiny needles into specific points in the body to help balance or normalize the "Chi" or Life Force. Acupuncture helps by increasing the detoxification in the body and also by relaxing the central nervous system to decrease anxiety and withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking. Sessions need to be done frequently in the first few weeks. The electrostimulation enhances the effects of the acupuncture by sending a light current into the acupuncture point.

Please let us know how it is working out for you. Acupuncture has been shown to be an effective treatment option in combination with other smoking cessation aids.
