Chris and Renee, welcome to SSC!  You've received lots of good advice from other members.  For me, my stat meter was a great motivator.  I challenged myself to see it increase every day.  Seeing how many cigarettes I didn't smoke, how much money I didn't spend, and how much time I gained back was a huge motivator for me.  When times were tough, I drank lots of ice water, ate carrot sticks, went for walks, changed my scenery, and avoided situations I felt I could fail (going to bars, seeing smoking friends, etc).  Do whatever you need to do to keep your quit.  In good times and in bad times.  Celebrating successes and getting back on track after a slip.  We're all here for each other!

Thanks for the support! I made it through work without smoking! I'm so excited about my new life! I just hope I can keep going! I have lots of support at work also. I work with two girls that just quit. So there is alot of food in the office! Now if only I can convince my family to quit it would be much easier on me! But they have to do that on there own.

Hey Renee and Chris, so glad you are here.  There is so much great support here no matter what.  It isn't going to be easy, it will be hard.  Just be prepared.  Don't do like I do from time to time and forget to put a patch on, it will bite you in the butt.  Make sure its the first thing you do when you get going in the morning, have plenty chewing gum, cold water and it never hurts to have hershey's kisses to melt in your mouth.  If you have a high stress job, be prepared to have exit strategies when people get on your nerves and you get one of those monster craves.  If you can't just leave and take a drive, go for a walk, even if it's up and down some stairs in the hall.  The craves will pass.  Do whatever you have to do to make the quit stick, learn what your triggers are and be prepared for them.  One of my triggers is anger.  When I get mad, I want to smoke....  If I'm at work, I have to post post post to get thru it (Thank God, people on this board care enough to bail me out and talk me thru it all).  If I'm at home, I use my hammer on something....   Anyway, stay close to the board and breathe really hard and deep when you can't and you have a crave...It will pass!!

Welcome Chris!!! I'm not new here but so far the day has gone very well for me. Today is my sisters Birthday and it will be hard not to smoke. The last hour of work is the worst! In the morning will be the true test. I always smoke before I go downstairs and make coffee. Thats something else I have to work on is not drinking so much coffee! But one thing at a time. I guess I'll chew gum instead drink lots of water too!

Welcome back Renee and welcome Chris!!!

Chris, you are right!!!  This is the hardest thing you will ever do!!!  The nico-demon is a powerful foe and it will take all your strength and determination to win this battle!  You guys CAN do this, just take it a minute, an hour, and a day at a time!!  Chris, be sure to go through the milestones in the program here!  It will really help you better understand the addictiona and provide you with great tips on coping with the cravings!!!  One last thing...  read and post, read and post! It will help distract yourself and will also provide you with more knowledge to help you beat this addiction!!!

Welcome Renee and Chris.

Stay close and ask for help when you need it.  Somebody will always be a long to offer some help. This is no easy task but like MM said, it is attainable.

Good Luck to both of you.

Hello Renee!  Hello Chris!  Glad to hear your joining the group!  Congrats, Chris, on those two days.  It's hard, for sure, but if you keep reading, lots of folks here can vouch that it is attainable.  I'm on the patch as well.  Stay close....

Oh, by the way, go look for Kristilu's hammock posting in new and general forum for a little R & R!
