Maybe I set my quit date too soon

It's never too soon and it's never too late.  
 
My personal experience is that I would not have gotten this far if my heart wasn't in the quit. The funny thing was that my heart wasn't really into the quit at all. I was totally unprepared. It was more of lark but the more I was quit the more I didn't want to throw away the quit. 
I'm talking about a tiny quit at that point, a morning... an afternoon... a day... several days.  Hey, I've come this far that slowly my heart was in the quit.  
 Now I'm not giving up.

One thing Carr talks about is if you keep cutting down over a long period of time you could potentially be creating a stronger attachment to smoking because every cigarette you smoke becomes very precious. The idea is to realize that even smoking one cigarette a day can be just as addictive because you are using willpower (and therefore tremendous effort) to get through the day on less cigarettes.  That's partly why he says to smoke like normal when reading the book until you finish it and decide to quit. Now I did cut down to 1/2 the amount I smoked for 5 days just for the transition. I think it was not enough time for me to think the cigarette was so important. Anyway. when you read the book see if that makes sense to you. If that's the case then you may want to cut down just before you decide to quit instead of cutting back over a long period of time.

Pupikat- I hope you continue to find more reasons not to smoke. Although smoking appears to be the crutch that gets you through all your trials it is in fact yet another serious problem to add to your list.
I could always find a zillion reasons why this day/week/ month could not be my quit time, but eventually the quit found me and I was ready.

Quitting is tough. No doubt about it. In my first post here I said I didn't want to quit but had to quit. Today is my 14th day being smoke free.
Am I happy about it? Yes.
Do I miss it? Heck yes.
 
I know that I need to be nicotine free. Part of me wants to be but the other part of me wants a cigarette so bad I can get that crappy taste back in my mouth just thinking about it.
 
I won't repeat all of what the others have said. You know they are right. You have to make the decision based on what will be right for you. Everyone here will support you as much as they can. Ultimately it's up to you.

   WOW!   There is a lot of wisdom on this page. Thanks so much for the help, advice, concern, and mostly showing me how much you care. When I started coming here before my mom came home from the hospital, I was really scared and concerned because she could not smoke in the hospital for 4 days. I was in a hurry so as not to be the reason she started smoking again. I was not that reason, but she did smoke when she got home, though she cut way down and we both made a commitment to quit smoking. I have been here reading every day, sometimes all day. I have visited other sites, but this is "home" and I don't care for the others. I finally found Alan Carrs book and started reading it.   I have incorporated many of the "tricks" I learned here, the cigs are on top of the fridge, the lighters are in a drawer, The one ashtray is always emptied and left out of site. It truly AMAZED me how much less I smoked just by not seeing all that stuff right in front of me in very easy reach. I am down from 28 +  to 3 to 10 a day. The reason I feel I need more time to prepare myself , I picked today because it was my younger brothers Birthday, he died in Feb., he drank himself to death. Toxic Ethenal Poinsoning. I also thought my mother would not return to smoking once I convinced her she slept through the roughest part of hell week and was at that point free of nicotine. I otherwise would have picked a date late in August to allow myself time to cut way down so as to cause the least possible amount of stress to my body. I mentioned I have been very ill for several years, no cure, no treatment, and with most diseases or illness, stress can cause it to get so much worse. The major thing I am afraid of is I get a severe skin disorder, first blisters leading to deep wounds. That is what I am afraid of. I did not use to be such a wimp. I was a strong minded go getter. Of course if  you let it, even a major illness can be a blessing and teach you things you would never have learned otherwise. Josie I think you were right about never being the right time, but I  feel the need to cut back further so as to cause the minimum amount of stress. Tresa I hope I am getting the right frame of mind and I know that nicodemon is laughing his head off at me. But I am staying, Bonnie I am going to read Alan Carr's book and work on putting my tools in place. I know I am an addict and I know it ain't gonna be easy, I know I will probably end up with this *&% skin thing. I just want it to go as smooth as possible and I think another month will have me cut down enough that maybe, just maybe it wont be as bad. Ron you are right I do want to do it, I don't feel pressure, just what I put on myself. I hope you will hang in there with me and keep me on the straight and narrow. I am so proud of all you. The courage you have shown is deeply inspiring. I only wish I could be half as brave.

Bonnie said it exactly. I think that reading the Alan Carr book will put you  in the above situation where you know in your heart that it's the right idea to quit and then, even though it is difficult at times, your mindset is convinced you will somehow make it happen. I signed up for this website, read the Carr book and quit within 5 days. I had tons of things going on at the same time and I just let it be because I knew inside I just wanted to quit. I surrendered controlling the quit and it so far has worked out OK.
 
Think about this and then decide to do it because you really want it for yourself. There is no peer pressure here, just help if you need it.

Like the others have said.. there is NEVER ever going to be a perfect time with no stress, no ..stuff happening. we don't live in sealed bubbles.. Would be nice to have one. for the first month of quitting....
 
   But you have to say I quit, I am doing this..  so people quit on the "spur" of the moment and are successful.
 
   So have all your tools, rewards .... distractions etc in place... just have everything as prepared as you can.  Set them out where you can see them...   I quit at noon..  That way  ... I thought I don't fel like I am "pressured" thinking about the "first smoke of the day.   so I set my date... and decided noon... ( I was on Chantix.. and i actually quit a day early.. as they tasted like a cow had camped in my mouth.
 
   Try to get the "Allen Carr's Easy Way To Quit Smoking" ( also I saw Trooper posted they have Allen Carr's Easy Way For Women To Quit Smoking"   It  really helped me to see in print  and read it.. ( I think there are also CD's to listen to.)
 
The day I started the Chantix ... we got news my mother in law has lung cancer... so I took a deep breath.. and said well it's now or never.  there is never going to be a "perfect time"  I can Always find an excuse for just one more, or too much .. so maybe tomorrrow...   NO it is now.. or never.    I dedicate this quit to my mother in law ... who I love dearly.
 
She is in remession, August 10, I will be 6 months smober.... This is the longest in 45 years  I have ever gone without smoking.
 
I just had an EKG and adenosine (chemical stress test)   ALL GOOD  ( I am a 5 yr stroke survivor) .... yes I have tried over the last 5 yrs...  but this one I decided is MY FINAL QUIT.
 
You can't do this half hearted.. you eithe want it  or you don't..  It is not easy.. and at times not pretty.... but it does get much easier.. and I feelvery proud that I have come this far... I am an addict and I could easily start agan... so I do this one day at a time... with a lot of help from my friends..(here) and my family (cheering and proud also)

 Hi Pupikat, Josie is right there is no good time, just need to quit and focus forward on it, if you dont have the right frame of mind then maybe its not time, but smoking will not make the stress of your problems any better at all, that is that old nico deamon sitting on your shoulder urging you on to smoke, he has to be ignored the whole time, i hope you stay, if not we will still be here when you return, you can do this if you want  Hang Tough :) Tresa
