Fighter, If you feel the urge, or are tempted to slip: AVOID the situation. Identify the situations when you normally smoke or chew, or feel cravings. For most, high-risk situations include work breaks, finishing meals, having coffee or being in a bar. Plan how you will avoid these situations for a few weeks. Plan for alternate activities. LEAVE the situation. If you find yourself in one of these high risk situations, leave if you can. And, leave before you get a craving. DISTRACT yourself from the craving. If you find yourself in a situation you can't leave and you get a craving, distract yourself from the craving by: Thinking about something else, like your Benefits of Quitting (or how much money youre saving every week, how your body is healing itself). Doing something else to distract yourself like drinking water or deep breathing exercises. Thinking about an upcoming event in your life, such as a vacation. DELAY acting on the craving If you can't keep your mind off it, then make a deal with yourself that you will wait 5 minutes before you give into the craving. The craving will usually pass in a couple of minutes anyway. If you delay, the craving will go away. Use SELF TALK A craving may be accompanied by negative thoughts about your ability to resist it. Use positive self talk statements to combat your negative thoughts. Also be sure to keep checking Mod's corner. We will be tackling stress management this month and next! Hey Fighter!!! I'm sure glad you were able to win that battle with the demon!!!! I have had a few of those stressful cravings and while at work, I would just go walk up and down the stairs a couple of times while breathing deeply and that seemed to do the trick!!! At home, I go out and pull weeds in the garden beds or the yard! Just anything to get away from the situation that caused the hard crave to begin with!!! Anyways, to go into that battle and come out the clear winner, you really are THE FIGHTER!!! It is times like you are now going through that bring out your true character and to me, you are a winner!!!! Keep up the great quit!!! Woooooohooooooooooo!!! Time for celebration! You made it, I KNEW you would!!! I am glad to hear that your are feeling better today! I am like you, I don't remember how I handled stressfull times before smoking. Guess you could say that is part if the quit, finding ways to handle situations that cause you to want to smoke. Walking has been a huge help for me, when I get really really stressed I will take a walk... Deep breathing, self talk/motivation and prayer also worked really well for me... I am sure that others will respond with other ideas and you can try them all till you find what works for you. It isn't always easy to not smoke, but it IS always worth it!!! Thank you everybody~your kind words really mean a lot to me. I did not cave in. It was the worse crave I've had yet and I wasn't sure if I could make it but I did. And I have to admit~I felt a lot better by this morning. So I was kind of suprised to see all of these posts on here and very greatful. This is a very stressfull time for me which would explain the extraordinary crave, but you know what you're all right they're could be worse things. And going back to smoking would definately be one. It's just really hard to remember sometimes how I dealt with situations like this before I had a ciggarette! Oh wait~I didn't..I was just a kid when I started smoking! Any suggestions? Hey fighter, Looking back over my diary--it seems that emotional stressful days have been the toughest for me. But--one by one they can be overcome; just take it minute by minute and stay strong. Remind yourself that smoking will not change ANYTHING that is stressing you -- except it will add another problem that will have to be dealt with at some time. Try not to look too far ahead--just get through each minute/hour and remind yourself that this TOO shall pass. Sending warm wishes for you & your mom, Deb My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2008 Smoke-Free Days: 51 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,530 Amount Saved: $344.25 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 20 Mins: 10 Seconds: 3

Fighter You are almost one month smoke free!!!! Way to go. You are not going to give up those hard earned days. Some situations will really tempt us into thinking that just one would make it all better. It is a lie. Tell yourself the truth. Smoking will not make it better; You will have to start all over, again. Get out your list of reasons of why you quit smoking. Your mother being in the hospital coupled with a big milestone, is a challenge for a lot of people. Just keep saying NO for a minute at a time, and this whole time will be behind you. You will be so glad that you didn't smoke. Remember you are not alone here. Good for you for posting. Keep posting. Grab an on-line buddy. Stay true to yourself I'm rootin for ya! Fighter We are in the same situation, I have been out of town for this whole week as my mother is in the hospital as well, thankfully she is much better. The whole time I have been there , smoking has been on my mind more than usual...stress I assume but actually I was stronger in my quit as I kept thinking how great it was that I could spend more time with her instead of having to run out to find a place to smoke. I hope that your mother is on the way to a speedy recovery and that you stay on your recovery road right along with her. Smoking will not relieve your stress.it will not change anything except for the way you feel about yourself. Stay strong and I wish you and your family all the best. Fighter, sorry to hear about your mom. I know this can be difficult. But keep a clear head about this. Think logically, how would a cigarette improve your situation? Wouldn't it really do just the opposite? I would bet your mother is is proud of you for quitting smoking. Be proud of your accomplishment, it is a difficult thing for most people. As you walk through the hospital and look at the people around you. Be glad you have your health and are taking appropriate steps to keep it! Hang in there, you can do it!
