Hi Guys, Thanks for the positive posts! I'm not going to go down the route of being influenced to give up hope through negative labels from others and if I was learned helpless, I would not have even attempted to quit in the first place. I am picking much more productive methods such as thought correction (which I will be doing each day this week). I have even been convinced to go back on the fluoxetine (prozac) to see if it helps. If after the end of March, I have made no improvements, then I will even consider going to the doctors. I still remain sceptical on that front mind you. My innate fear of doctors might be showing through. I'll continue working as hard as I can. I won't be beaten just yet. Next time I will write on a more person centric approach instead of a general status update. I would like to thank you for your continued efforts in keeping me on the right path. Until next time.. Hi JDK, Well first off, I would say the language used in the book is anything less than motivational. Instead of focusing on your "learned helplessness" why not focus on the resources you have available to you to help you get together the skills you need to overcome this addiction and other underlying issues you may be experiencing. Let's also take a look at your leverage, the strengths, skills and reason that will help you be successful? Hang in there. Let's get you away from that edge. :) Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator

Holidays are the worst time really because there are just so many triggers around but it is the old 4 seasons thing again isn't it? Kev, I am so sorry that you are feeling so bad. It is quite possible that smoking has been masking an underlying chemical problem, and that you have been essentially self-medicating. It would be good to try and find an alternative non-smoking (non-fatal) solution to the depression, though. Please do read Leslie's post "The Big Cover Up" about ADD/ADHD. I am not sure whether it applies to you, but you might want to think about seeking some medical advice. I know you do not like your doctor - can you find one who is more sympathetic? It might be worth paying to see someone privately if you cannot got anywhere on the NHS. I don't mean some quack, but someone properly qualified who has an interest in depression. I'd also be a bit cautious about labels ('learned helplessness'). Labels can be self-fulfilling, if you are not careful. If you are depressed, this would explain why you feel helpless. Oh, and the pill swallowing issue - you can crush tablets to a powder with a pestle and mortar or back of a spoon. Alternatively, you could try the method that works with my dog!! I take a slice of squashy cheese (e.g. Brie, Cambenbert), and embed the pill - then eat the cheese (cheesy biscuit optional). Anyway, see how things go with the CBT. You can do this in addition to looking at other options.
