Cigarettes Not Smoked

Members, To help clarify this post a bit: Reframing is a way for irrational beliefs to be put into context and challenged based on evidence, past experience and in a more realistic and positive light. By doing this, people are able to develop more rational beliefs and healthy coping strategies. To put this into context, lets say a university student decides to quit smoking over his summer break. At first he is upset and thinks this the worst possible decision he could make because he realizes that he can no longer go out to bars with his friends, may have to stop going to football games with them (where they smoke a lot) and has to deal with his girlfriend, who is also a smoker. After Hell Week hes had some time to relax and reflect a little more on his decisions. He realized now that he has more time on his hands, he can learn how to play the guitar, something he had always wanted to do but was too busy to learn. He discovers that hes a great player and has a real talent at creating music. He practices all summer and when he returns to school decides to change his major to music. After graduation he embarks on a successful music career. When he talks to his friends (who btw still smoke) he is insistent that quitting smoking was the best thing he could ever do. The purpose of this post way realize that sometimes we have irrational thoughts that if we just put them into a different frame can really change the way that we perceive them. I don't know Aloha, I don't think I'm a ****head but I'm pretty sure I'm a dumb*** who can't really grasp difficult concepts like this. I mean, who would think to try to look at things in the most positive light in order to get the best results? Or to make lemonade out of Rudolphs red nose? Wait, I'm confused again, aren't I? Miss you, Pen! And still not smoking either. Hey! I just realized this now IS a thread about not smoking! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 194 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,820 Amount Saved: $1,134.90 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 13 Mins: 22 Seconds: 9

I love you, Pen, even if you are a ****head,or even if a ****head you are. I'm still not smoking, either. And Kelly, maybe you're right. Maybe if we read more about it we'd understand it better. Well, I'm glad I'm not the only dumb a** who has to read and re-read this difficult concept to try to understand it. I'm glad you have it mastered, pen, but I don't. So, I'm eagerly looking forward to tomorrow so Brenna can explain it to us. You are a ****head! Ive tried to look at it the other way (?). Ive tried to reframe the context (very difficult) and Ive tried to reframe the content and came up with A ****head you are. No matter what I do with it, it still looks like You are a ****head to me. BTW, Im still not smoking. Penitent

On a serious note. I'm trying to wrap my mind around the material too, basically what I get out of it is an example of a co worker I've been struggling with over the past year plus. She's doesn't communicate with her partner on shift and tends to be very pushy and refuses to hear another person's opinion when she feels she's struck on a solution to a problem. She'll argue that her solution is the best until the listener either agrees with her, or gives up due to exhaustion. I guess I could reframe her behavior and say that she's at her best when working with minimal supervision and has strong leadership skills, and advocates for herself well. Am i close? I think the gist of it is in the old saying when life hands you a lemon? I think that if life hands you a lemon, go ahead and make lemonaid, then find someone that life gave vodka and have a party :-) My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/9/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 543 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 21,720 Amount Saved: $10,860.00 Life Gained: Days: 50 Hrs: 8 Mins: 1 Seconds: 26

Grandma - Some of it may actually be in his text books. Brenna - who are the original authors of these excerpts?
