Weaning off chantix/Halfing the dosage?

16 years ago 0 3875 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Aloha, Be cautious! I have just finished the full patch program and coming off is OK, but I worry when someone wants to fasttrack. I am the better safe than sorry girl, slow and steady gets the goal. Just me! You must be close to being halfway through or so is it? Be careful! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 66 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,664 Amount Saved: $696.3 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 0 Mins: 53 Seconds: 41

Alohakeia, Ask your pharmacist! If by chance you don't get a clear answer here, you or your doctor can call the hotline. They have specialists that can assist you. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Aloha, I am/was a Chantix user also. I was very tentative about being on such a new drug for an extended period of time so I never went to the 2 blue pills a day. After the initial week, I cut the pills in half and took one half in the morning and one half at night for about 4 days. I then went to only half a pill once a day for another 3 days or so and then quit taking Chantix altogether. For me, it was just getting over the whole fear of withdrawal thing and I knew I'd be fine. The only thing I noticed was that I was experiencing some stiffness in my hands and I got a little depressed the 3rd day after I quit taking Chantix. Other than that, my quit is intact and I'm moving forward like the majority of the people on this planet do each and every day...being a non-smoker. Alohakeia I am using Chantix and am only a few days ahead of you. I have been thinking about tapering to 1 mg a day the last few days of my prescription but not this soon. If your only motivation in doing this is money take a hard look before you do it. As smokers we would find a way to pay for cigarettes at the cost of something else, actually at the cost of almost anything else ! So you might want to to take the same approach here. Rewards are important but they don't have to cost anything. More importantly our greatest reward is staying smoke free. I am guessing that during clinical trials and testing there were many variations on dosage, length of use, etc. and what we are being prescribed was the most effective for the most people, profit motives not withstanding :) Just keep all this in mind. alohakeia, During my 3rd month I was determined to do the same thing..halve the dosage. The first week I did the full dosage. The second week I was taking one pill per day until the weekend, when I forgot to take it for 2 days in a row. Once that happened, I figured I would just stop altogether since I already had 2 days down. I didn't experience any side effects other than I was sleepy...really sleepy. That has passed now, and I have been off the chantix for over a week and a half. I will admit to missing the dreams! They were so real and so entertaining. That's my story! Good luck to you! Aloha - Whatever you do, make sure that your head is really really set into this quit before you wean off of the Chantix. You really, really need to be secure enough to know that no matter how tempted/stressed/angry etc. you are, you will not break down and smoke. Remember - if you were to smoke now, you'd feel nothing cause of the chantix, but without chantix ... DANGER, DANGER! :8o: At least that's my 2 cents, based on how I feel about it for me. Alohakeio, I am on Chantix and for the last week I have been taking one a day. I have been taking in the morning and so far it hasn't been to bad. I do have a few more smaller craves then when I was on the 2 a day but I have also had plenty of stress recently. I am going to continue on the one a day as long as it works because I really don't believe the doctors know enough about what happens when you stop. I asked my doctor and she tells me I really don't know. She says if you have a hard time stay on it longer that is her answer. Good luck. See you on the ship tommorow I will be waiting for you. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 50 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,005 Amount Saved: $325 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 23 Mins: 52 Seconds: 23

see, that's one of the things I've been thinking about..what happens when the chantix is not taking up those little holes in the receptors? i sure dont want to go through withdrawals all over again. i know, having tried just about every other method, that the nicotine withdrawal with chantix was very mild. Just scared what it will be like when i go off chantix. figure maybe i can kill 2 birds so to speak...stretch it out, deal with a lot of the psychological triggers, before i give my dopamine receptors a try on their own. Thanks for sharing your experience shakes.....glad you are doing it again -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 49 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,970 Amount Saved: $333.2 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 18 Mins: 35 Seconds: 36

Aloha, Aloha! I haven't tried that, but I tried quitting in February using Chantix. And I couldn't afford my second month. So I stretched my last week out, taking one MG a day for two weeks, then stopped altogether. About three or four days later, (on day 24 of my quit) I had a cigarette and it was all down hill from there. Now I'm on Chantix again, and I intend to stay on it until I know I'm strong enough. Even put it on a credit card, whatever. It's worth it. 'Cause this is THE quit; I know it. Also, that first quit, the failed one, was without this support system. Gotta love it! Don't know if this helps at all. Just thought I'd share... --Shakes My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 35 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 704 Amount Saved: $315 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 10 Mins: 45 Seconds: 30

First off, I am not asking for medical advice..I am seeing my doctor, but chantix is so new she doesn't have much experience to go on. Chantix is so expensive (alright not quite as expensive as my cigs were, but pretty darn close), and I really am wanting to have some money for rewards, so......I am thinking of cutting my dosage in half for my third 4 weeks, so that I can continue for another 4 weeks. In the literature that comes with the pills, it said that some of the experimental group did this because of side effects. I am wondering if anyone else has tried this, and if so, what was it like? Was it still effective? I am also thinking it might be good in that my brain receptors will be weaning off the drug. I really would appreciate feedback on this. Staying quit is the most important thing to me. I don't want to jeopardize that. -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 49 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,965 Amount Saved: $333.2 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 18 Mins: 16 Seconds: 39
