Side Effects from Upping Meds?

Hi Mel, Give the "upped" med a chance to work, but do be aware of how the change feels to you. I personally could not take Paxil. It was discovered I'm allergic to the drug class family that paxil is in after I developed a rash. My Doc changed me to another med in a different drug class and all is well. We suffer from panic and I know it's difficult to understand the role it plays in different people. It's also hard not feel "panicky" at a new sensation. Here comes the 'but', But, TRY to convince yourself that you have make the panic subside, just for a moment or two, in order to make a logical assessment of the situation. Your panic WILL rush you into "dread". It will be hard for you to do this and it takes a lot of practice. I'm still trying to do perfect it, and I am successful at times. I hope I've made sense. Here is some info for you: 1) Upping the dosage of the medication: It (Does Not) take the same amount of time to kick in as when you first started taking it. Paxil is much like prozac in the area of reaction time. Basicly how it works is, once you begin taking the med, it builds in your body, it "Can" take anywhere from 2-6 weeks for you to actually feel something once taking the med. As you have seen, its not a BAM! Hello! Here I am! type of med. Slowly you start feeling better, and each day have more pep in your step. Now, upping the dosage, it does take some time for the higher dose to take more of an effect in your body, but it is in the range of 1-2 weeks. The symptoms your are having may be cause by a "Drug overdose" which is not like overdosing on a narcotic. It may be actually "shocking" your system as it kicks in. I would personally wait another week, and see how you feel. If the symptoms do not change, consult your doctor and let him/her know. They may want to even UP your dosage, this is when I would seek another doctor, someone that is familier with the disorder, and VERY familier with the meds. Too many doctors today want to push drugs on you. And when you tell them "they are not working like I would like." they try to UP the dosage on you. I like to call these doctors "Drug Pushers". A little knowledge I have gained from my ventures, is.. There is NO cure all drug! I know this just hits you in the gutt, and you think "I am doomed forever!" But you arent! :) What alot of people need to realize is that meds are o.k. BUT, you still need to take other steps to help control your anxiety/depression. I have found that meditation, or even yoga, can help your mind very very well. I hope this helps :) God Bless. -MrCrazyCool

Hi Mel. This is something that really annoys me about doctors and pharmacists. Very rarely do they tell you how to increase your dose properly. I've had doctors say to me, oh your'e only going up 5mg so just go straight onto that its too small a dose to have any side effects. What RUBBISH!!! I've had one doctor tell me how to increase my dose and it worked for me so now I ignore what the other doctors say and do what works for me. I had really bad side effects and increased panic attacks when I upped my dose in one step. The trick is to do it gradually. It took me a month to get up to my correct dose. I got a pill cutter and increased my dose by a quarter of a pill every seven days, sometimes I even increased by less than a quarter and I found that I had minimal side effects if any at all. I would say that this is perhaps what has happened to you and is why you are experiencing side effects, you're body has been hit with a larger dose of chemicals and its trying to get used to it whereas with smaller gradual increases in the dose its getting used to a tiny extra amount of the chemicals every week. Hope that helps!

Hi, I recently have upped my Paxil from 10mgs to 20mgs, I actually feel worse...more anxiety, more panic attacks at night and more spaciness for the past 2 weeks I have been on the 20mgs. Has anyone had a worse reaction to upping the meds? my pharmacist said it takes a month to start working, she said its like starting all over again, but I didn't feel like this when I started the 10mgs.
