My quit date

16 years ago 0 53 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
For myself, I smoke less at work than I do at home so that's why I set my quit date on a Monday. But for when I was home, I did plan to get some things done that I just hadn't gotten around to. I held off bathing the dogs until the smoke was gone from the house since I could only assume that they smelled of it. I've also defrosted my deep freeze, organized some files, cleaned things, etc. My house is looking good, though, and the dogs smell nice. :) Really, your first few days you need to keep yourself out of situations where you tend to freely smoke if possible and keep busy. Do others on here have the same thoughts or did you about just locking yourself away for the first couple of day's? I do have a project in my house I plan on tackling beginning Saturday and if I can will just stay there all day long.

Kathy really great post. Terry, I was scared too. and I posted about it, that is the balcony teasing started. I was off to the beach and worried about not smoking as we had drinks on the balcony....I was scared about what would happen as I got off chantix. Our friend Pen said it best I guess JFDI. Terry, after 3 days the nicotine is gone from your body, the mental stuff takes longer, but it sucks the most 2-3 weeks. You can plan and prepare for this. Do what Kathy said to get ready. Get some books or hobbies going to occupy yourself. If you can just get through the first part Terry, you will be on the other side and really see the positives of quitting. You are a beautiful vibrant woman don't you want to stay that way? Kelly has a saying I love on FB, "breathin easy", that is the way it is Terry, and it is awesome. Do it for you. Hi Terry, I don't know if this will help you but it worked well for me. :) In the week leading up to my quit date, I didn't think about how difficult quitting would be but focused, and really concentrated, on how life would be as a non smoker. I pictured all of the ashtrays and their associated mess gone from my home. I pictured going to friends homes and not having to leave a discussion to go stand in the garage or outside to have a smoke. I pictured my trip to Cuba at the end of February without having to get outside before clearing security for that last smoke and then juggling luggage, smokes and a lighter to rush one down before getting on the bus to the hotel at the other end of the flight. And, most of all, I pictured telling my husband/son/mother/father that I had quit smoking! And by the time my date arrived, I wasn't nervous, I was was excited. Like I said, this worked really well for me but this is such a personal journey. If any part of my method helps you out, then I'm happy to share. This is why I post here because left to my own I will listen to this stupid head of mine. Thanks for all the great words. I'll keep trying. It's just 3 days ahead of me. I keep thinking I'm going to have to lock myself up in my house. Terry

Terry as north americans we have been conditioned to think the worst. We have every catastrophic thoughts about ourselves known to man .We dwell in the world of what if.What will happen to me if I quit smoking, will I die ,will I be able to cope ,what if I can't.I think you know what I'm talking about. If you look around the site you'll see lots of people that survived and lived to laugh another day without smoking.Hell I managed after 50 + years of smoking and so can you. ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 316 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,688 Amount Saved: $3,160.00 Life Gained: Days: 76 Hrs: 21 Mins: 7 Seconds: 35

Terry: What do you have to be scared of? The worst things will happen if you continue smoking, and those things are permanent and life threatening. The things to fear from quitting smoking are generally uncomfortable for the short term, and then disappear. I suppose fear of failure is another issue. But the good news is that you always have the chance to try again, and each episode only makes you stronger. Just let that strong woman do her thing. I am scared. I've been a smoker for 35 years. This is so much harder than anything I've ever done. I do have grandchildren that I want to see grow up. I want to see my great-grandchildren. I am a strong woman and I know I'm stronger than the nicodemon. I keep thinking maybe it just isn't my time to quit. That's a copout, I know that. I am going to keep posting here and still plan to give this my best shot on Saturday. Thanks for the words. Terry

Good points from Alohakeia. The only thing I have to add is would you like the bandage ripped off s-l-0-w-l-y or fast? Just get it done - I now you can do it. You're just getting scared is all, Terry...or I should say that little devil nicodemon is. Knows what you are meaning to do....starve him out of you. I'd like to know what your opinion is on a few things; Who's tougher? You or the nicodemon? Who do you want to control your life? Do you want to be a sick old smoker or a healthy old nonsmoker? Do you have any kids or grandkids you'd like to see grow up? Do you prefer free air or out of an oxygen tank? Do you prefer a few days or weeks of discomfort or years of health problems? I'll be looking forward to hearing your opinions :eg: My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 314 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 12,560 Amount Saved: $2,135.20 Life Gained: Days: 44 Hrs: 6 Mins: 33 Seconds: 44
