A wee question about health after a quit. Any long term quitters help?

This is a bit late in response, but I have a theory of my own. I've been having many more allergic days and getting itchy, sensitive skin and hives for the past several months. I think it has something to do with the brain receptors and nerve endings reconfiguring after we are quit for a while. Like first they were numb when we quit and lost the nicotine stimulation and now they are all tingly and oversensitive. I suspect in time it will all even out. I don't know the science, its just my personal theory. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/29/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 316 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,792 Amount Saved: $1,289.28 Life Gained: Days: 30 Hrs: 1 Mins: 57 Seconds: 29

Serenity I Hear ya. I may not be able to breathe but I HEAR YA! Last year this time I quit. I then got my first sinus infection and it seemed to last forever (some may remember my groaning). It took several visits to the doctor, a CT scan and several rounds of antibiotics. What a miserable way for your body to thank you for quitting smoking I thought. Bring on 2008! You guessed it! I'm on my third course of antibotics after several visits to the doctor. And you know they just prescribe stronger and stronger stuff and it just makes you more resistant. So we will see how round three does. But it does make you wonder why this is the thanks that you get, and so I totally share your frustration. On a better note I went to the dentist Monday and they could not be happier with my mouth. Gums go into a coma when you smoke just like the cilia in your lungs. All's well there. Guess we have to accentuate the positive!! Stay quit and hang tough. We know what the solution is NOT! :) Audrey My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/16/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 379 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,580 Amount Saved: $1,061.20 Life Gained: Days: 37 Hrs: 23 Mins: 37 Seconds: 18

Hello Serenity2 Bit late with this sorry. I wonder if it's just a combination of what other people on here have said about more sensitive sinuses and the fact that there are a lot of bugs around at the moment. At New Year our party was down to half what it would normally be because of some 'flu like thing that was felling people left, right and centre. I haven't had any more or fewer colds since I stopped smoking but they seem to go faster and I don't have the same amount of phlegm hanging around. Nice! Hope you're feeling a wee bit better?! I've had a host of health problems since I quit! I was very frequently sick with colds and flus for a while as well. You know - quitting is quite the shock to your system - I'd imagine that your imune sytem would take a blow as well. I started taking those "Airborne" things everytime I was around anyone that was ill, and I feel that it's helped a TON! Hi serenity! Congrats on those 400+ days. I agree with kiwi - I've had a host of sinus problems that I didn't have when I smoked. I'm much more sensitive to changes in the weather and humidity as it relates to my sinuses. Even with that though, when I do get an actual cold I never get chest congestion anymore. When I smoked it was automatic and it would linger forever. I just got over a pretty ugly sinus infection and got a bad cough but it is going around and a lot of non-smokers I know have it also. I was SO thankful that I quit because I'm convinced it would have turned into bronchitis if I were still smoking. Yuck. If you are worried, I'd ask your doctor - can't hurt. Hope you feel better soon :) All the best My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/5/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1267 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 25,340 Amount Saved: $5,701.50 Life Gained: Days: 98 Hrs: 18 Mins: 31 Seconds: 7

I haven't had a decent cough, cold or flu for over 5 years, but then again i avoid sick people like the plague.. why not right ? + i eat lots of fruit & veg.... cant beat vitamin C. One thing i have noticed is my sinuses are more sensitive to dust & perfumes, i put that down to having a cleaner nose thats not bunged up with nicotine tar & burnt nose hairs. I can guarantee you one thing tho, your colds won't be from not smoking. hope you feel better soon, go pamper yourself... congrats on the stats btw My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 1118 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 39,130 Amount Saved: $7,267.00 Life Gained: Days: 164 Hrs: 5 Mins: 45 Seconds: 15

serenity, Congrats on your one year + quit! The weather is always a factor for colds and illness, so check with your doctor to rule out anything medical. It will pass and it can be normal :) Josie, Health Educator

One of the mods posted once to a post like yours that smoking masks alot of symptoms, and when you quit they are more prevalent. Congrats on your 18 months, that is awesome!! take care of yourself, Sue My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/3/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 265 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,650 Amount Saved: $463.75 Life Gained: Days: 25 Hrs: 21 Mins: 30 Seconds: 26

Hi Serenity I was lucky but I remember when my friend quit (several years ago) she was sick with colds and bronchitis (sp?) all the time. Her doctor told her that her lungs were healing and that it could take a long time. She is very healthy now and no more sickness...wishing you better health soon.
