No worries, nonic...I'm in charge here ;) Just a bit of a rough ride lately but no urge to smoke, just to slay some dragons. Thanks for your concern and keep up the inspirational tids and bits. Dave Yes, the why of the quit and the why of the addiction are big pieces of the process. At least they are for me. If I thought that smoking where just an activity that I could turn on and off like a faucet, I would never be able to quit. I have to go down to the basement punch a hole in the foundation, and then dig my way along the path of the water pipe until I find the source of the water. For me anyway, this has all been about understanding the reasons that I smoked, and then altering my perceptions to allow myself not to smoke any more... As you gain more and more success at this, you will reap huge benefits and in equal measure so will all of those who love you in this world... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 387 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,610 Amount Saved: $4,063.50 Life Gained: Days: 72 Hrs: 3 Mins: 7 Seconds: 22

Hey Moss Look at you almost 2 months down, that is a huge deal. I know it hasn't been easy, but the fact of the matter is that it has been, is now and will be in the future (you being quit that is)...Stay well, THIS CAN BE DONE... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 387 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,610 Amount Saved: $4,063.50 Life Gained: Days: 72 Hrs: 3 Mins: 5 Seconds: 29

Todash This does not sound good...I do hope that the past is behaving itself and you are not getting all "tangled up in blue" over something that happened in a slightly different time frame. If you are I understand, I have my own bits and pieces of the past that come visiting at the most unlikely times. The one thing though that I insist they know is that smoking a cigarette will not change them. Smoking a cigarette will only bring the present down to the level of the past...And that can't be a good thing... Stay well my friend, you have fought for this and you have succeeded, we need to keep succeeding at this point... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 387 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,610 Amount Saved: $4,063.50 Life Gained: Days: 72 Hrs: 3 Mins: 5 Seconds: 0

Hi Nonic Great stuff! I really strongly agree with you about two particular things. First, it's a mistake to think I'm being deprived of smoking. I'm not. I am free to smoke any time I want. I think if you try and kid yourself that you 'can't' smoke, the fact that you (obviously) can will jump out and get you in the end, at some difficult moment. You can try and fool yourself that you can't smoke some of the time, but not all of the time, to coin a phrase (Lincoln?) It's a hard truth, but nevertheless true, that I can smoke. I have to learn to recognise, live with, and then pride myself on the fact that while I can smoke, I am choosing not to. Second, I'm not doing this for anyone else. I am doing it for me. I caused this addiction problem and I have to fix it, for me. Others - my kids for example - will benefit if I am successful, and are entitled to want me to be successful, but unless I decide I want to quit, I am unlikely to succeed. Anyway thank you for your carefully thought out and beautifully expressed opinions. Good luck all Dave My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/30/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 16 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 400 Amount Saved: 110.00 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 14 Mins: 37 Seconds: 34

Another great one, Nonic. Thank you. Your posts always contain subjects to ponder. There is something for everyone, from old timers to newbies. Here, I thought all along I was simply saying to myself, "nah, nah, nah". I was really saying "smoking causes me stress, it does not relieve stress!" I keep replaying in my mind of how in the old days, I had no control. Thanks again, G :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 178 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,340 Amount Saved: $854.40 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 8 Mins: 18 Seconds: 29

kristilu Good stuff there, it sounds as if you have got a real good hold on this thing. A number of people here have similar situations. It must be difficult, but not impossible to accomplish. Stay strong, attitude counts a great deal... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 386 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,580 Amount Saved: $4,053.00 Life Gained: Days: 71 Hrs: 22 Mins: 33 Seconds: 50

Nonic, my reasons at first, were mostly about myself. But, then i slipped and I had to really think about why i was quitting. What I found out, is , I am doing it all for me. For my lungs, my health, for my self esteem... That became clear to me tonight, as my husband smoked in another room in the house and even though I could smell it, I sat on the couch and I was fine. I didn't even think about going to ask him for a puff. I had to realize that it was just about me or I was going to fail. Last year in January, we both quit, after 60 days I found out he had been sneaking on a daily basis. I felt cheated, betrayed and angry. I had suffered for 60 days, thinking it was something we were doing together and then wham! So I fell off the wagon. But, this time is different. He talks about quitting, but I'm not pressuring him. He will quit when he is ready. And I will be fine either way. Besides, we'll probably get along better if we quit at different times.
