Yeah, it does feel good not to have a smoke. Last night at the potluck there were some people outside smoking. I was standing there waiting for a cab and I could see them all standing out there freezing their yahoos off. For a fleeting moment I wanted to join them, buy a cigarette from somebody but I talked myself out of it. I'm sure glad I did. This morning isn't too bad and it's usually in the morning when it's the worse for me. I think of how bad I would feel if I got myself some cigarettes. I don't want to go through that again. I'm not so edgy this morning either. But got to take it one craving at a time. Hey Ginette. That feeling you had when you were strong enough to resist smoking - remember that feeling. Day 8 will be what you make of it - it will be easy or it will be hard. Remember that feeling though - you are winning! You are beating addiction, you are in control (even though it mightn't feel like it at the moment). Every time you beat a craving, your resolve gets so much stronger and you start to believe you can do it. You can! What feeling would you have if you went and bought some cigarettes - I would imagine you would feel like a failure and you would be really disappointed that all your hard work was ruined. Distract, delay, deep breath ... whatever you need to do. It does get so much better - I hardly think of smoking at all now. I went out for our Christmas work party on Friday night. Late in the evening, a packet of smokes was purchased and most of our party were smoking them. I just called a cab and went home. Man, did I feel good about that the next morning. I'm really starting to like that feeling of not "having" to have a smoke. It rocks! Thanks, Sparky. I did go to the potluck but I didn't stay too long. I was really on edge and shaky...the crowd of people was getting to me. I feel a little bit better being at home, at least I can have the shakes without having to explain anything to anybody. I didn't cave in today and have a smoke. I feel pretty good about that. Tomorrow is Day 8 and I wonder what it will be like. I hope it won't be as hard as today. Today was a real bummer. Cravings galore and really edgy. Got to take it one moment at a time. Wish I could give you a hug, ((((HUG)))) You sound so down. Look into the magic mirror-----what do you see? You see a winner. Be kind to yourself. You smoked for a long time and in seven days you are just learning how to quit. I guess I'll leave it if gets to be too much, Danielle. Not much else I can do. I'm really down and out right now. Things aren't working out as well as I thought they would. Plans got changed again. I'm tired of dealing with unreliable people. Maybe, I'm just getting grumpy with my quit. But I thought the patch would relieve my need for nicotine more than that. Good thing I'm not going cold turkey. I wouldn't last. Ginette, Have a plan for your potluck supper tonight. What will you do if the craves become too much? Yes, the first week is tough but it gets better so hang in there and reward yourself for working so hard to push through those craves. Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator

Ginette you are so young into your quit. You are experiencing first on so many things. Look at you, you have 7 days!! Tomorrow if I am remembering right will be you first 8 days not smoking. If that pot luck is going to put your quit in danger, stay home. There will be lots of gatherings. Believe me it is not fun starting over and over and over and for what one maybe two cigs? So not worth it. People should understand and if they don't, tough luck. You are taking charge of you health and life and if it means staying home a few times so be it. That spacey feeling and la la land does go away. For some quickly and for some awhile longer. Be patient, good things will come and you will be so happy that you didn't smoke. Sounds like you are trying to do the right thing, now do it, DON'T SMOKE :eg: Do me a favor if you go tonight, wear a rubber band around your wrist and when you think of smoking snap it. It will be Sparky say "Ginette snap out of it!!" Woke up this morning talking myself into getting a pack of cigs. But I decided to let time go by for a while and see what would happen. The craving went away. But a little while ago it came back with a vengeance. I talked to a couple of friends and told them what I was going through but I don't think they understand. Decided to post here. I tried to get hold of Betty my quitting buddy and there was no answer. I'm just barely hanging in there. I'm taking deep breaths. I've got mixed feelings about going to a potluck supper tonight. It will be fun to be with people I know but there are some who smoke. They smoke outside but they come back in and they smell like smoke. It will trigger cravings again, I know. I don't know what to do. Maybe, I'll go and bite the bullet. It's only for an evening anyway. I feel like a real space cadet today...in lala land. I hope it will go away soon. Still struggling but it is gettin easier as time goes by. I have a lot of relief in between cravings which helps an awful lot.
