I guess I must be the exception to the rule again because all I did was slap on a patch, sign up at SSC and sat back and waited and let everbody here take responsability for my quit. :)Probably won't work for everybody and I guess we'll just have to wait and see if it works for me :quest: My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 234 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,212 Amount Saved: $2,340.00 Life Gained: Days: 53 Hrs: 10 Mins: 38 Seconds: 59

Totally agreed with everyone here. I'm never annoyed when people think there is a magic bullet for quitting as often they are sold to like that. Ever notice the patch adverts which state how great they are at getting people to quit all by themselves (like the wearer who was an addict suddenly has magical powers to defend herself against cigarette attacks)...well in tiny letters across the bottom of the screen for a few seconds it says 'requires will power'. I've also read quit smoking books that say 'no will power required'. So there is conflicting advice all over the place. Of course it is all to make a quick buck out of you if you hadn't guessed already. Thats why these things aren't 'cost-only'. Penitents statement is so true 'The person who starts it has to end it. No-one or nothing can do it for you'. It is a mindset thing. I know people who have been in hospital for long periods of time (hence gone through the withdrawal process) and once they're back out of that front door, are smoking again. Actually I also know people who have discharged themselves earlier than they should....just so that they could smoke...ME! The best advice you get is for free. 'You will stay quit if your desire to stay quit is higher than your desire to smoke' (pure logic) 'Smoking will not make the situation better. It will still be there when you have finished your smoke' (especially good in a crisis situation) 'Everyone can quit' (pure logic again, if you don't touch a cigarette you are quit. Cigarettes don't magically appear lit in your mouth) 'Take it one step at a time, don't think too far ahead' (a step could be 1 second if needed) I got all this for free from various people at the SSC. Kaiti, Can I have my songsheet back please! :) I always get saddened and mildly irritated when people think popping some gum, slapping on a patch or signing up here is all that's needed as they sit back and wait, and when it doesn't happen for them, they start whining and blaming anything but themselves. We can support here but we cannot (and I don't want to) quit for them. They must take responsibility for their quits and that means right mind-frame and right attitude. Let's make no mistake here - the one who starts to smoke is the same one who must end it! Penitent d1270 :)

Bang on, kaiti. I know people have asked me about the various methods I've used & they've said, "so nothing works, then?" or something like that. I have always answered that they all work, but nothing has helped me not start again. Ultimately, it is up to us to do the hard work. Thank you all for being here in the trenches with me. How true that is, kaiti. No matter what "help" we get, it IS up to us to take responsibility for our own quits. Nicely said. I was just talking to a co-worker and she was saying that she had heard on the news about a "new shot" that will help you quit smoking. So I'm thinking to myself, a professional quitter in my own right, is this the smoking gun?? Then I realize, science is getting better at giving us all kinds of choices in our quest to be smoke free, and they all work. What they can't give us is a cure for the emotional and physical attachment to cigerette's. That we have to do all on our own. So as we all choose our own weapons to fight the good fight to be smoke free whether it be cold turkey, nicoteen gum, patches, wellbutrin, chantix or anything else, remember, they can all have the potential to work perfectly with the right frame of mind and attitude. You have to have your head in the game to quit smoking. That's why this site is soooo wonderful! Just my thoughts for the day.
