15 days- and it's getting WORSE

My Quit Date: 10/17/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 15 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 300 Amount Saved: 69.00 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 4 Mins: 32 Seconds: 27 That's your quit meter Cat! That is fantastically huge that you have not smoked 300 cigarettes. Can you imagine how yuck those would look if you had saved all 300 butts and kept them in a bucket (with some water, stir it up, have a smell .... shudders). I think you are through the worst part physically, you may now just need to concentrate more on the mental part of addiction. That's the part where your brain tries to trick you into giving it what it wants (nicotine!!!!!!!!!). And you need to find some way to divert those thoughts away from smoking. At first, I found it all really, really exhausting and I ALMOST gave in so many times. I would even walk into shops and stare at the cigarettes ... lol. But it definitely gets better as each day goes by. Now, there are whole chunks of my day where I don't even think of fags. I expect (and dearly hope) that that will only continue until there comes a day where not smoking is as familiar to me as smoking used to be. Cat, I really do hope you keep not smoking - I wish I'd been clever enough to stop in my 30's. I have real breathing issues now and I'm only 9 years older than you. And there's nothing "bad girl" about walking around with an oxygen tank. Good luck, stay strong (we say Kia kaha in NZ). PS. Alohakeia is completely right ... chocolates are good. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/23/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 39 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 975 Amount Saved: $468.00 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 16 Mins: 43 Seconds: 39

Welcome to SSC, Catiorioc. Hang in there and don't give in to temptation. Breaking free from this addiction is well worth it! You just need to believe that it will get better....and it will! One day, one hour, one minute at a time. Just don't smoke! It always gets worse before it gets better. You have to find ways to fill your time. It will get better, trust me on that. Stick with it. You will be glad you did. Thanks for your answer! It's great to know that I'm not alone... I realise that my post was ambiguous- but you are right: right now, it's an image problem. Stupid, really, that smoking was a way I projected my post-teenage rebellious attitude. Childish. But your idea is not bad: how do others come accross as "bad" and "sexy" without smoking (or alcohol or any other addiction I do not want to have problems with...). Maybe I should give my colleague a big box of chocolates to make up for the cigarette holder- she's trying to lose weight ;-) My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/17/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 15 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 300 Amount Saved: 69.00 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 4 Mins: 53 Seconds: 47

Hi cat I'm a little confused by your post. You titled it 15 days and it's getting worse, but you say it's getting easier in the day-to-day. It sounds like the urges are getting easier to handle overall, but that you're struggling with your self image now that you're a non-smoker. I think many people go through that struggle when they change what they are doing in some way, whether it's where they live, their job, their friends, their music, how they spend their free time, etc. Giving up smoking is just one aspect of your outward persona. Surely you have other ways to project who you are - your clothes, your makeup, your music, how you move. You can be a bad girl without smoking. Take a look around next time you're out. I'm sure there are other bad girls who don't smoke. How do they manage it? And bad, bad co-worker!!!! I hope you made something equally bad out of it and returned it to her ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 224 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,960 Amount Saved: $1,523.20 Life Gained: Days: 31 Hrs: 7 Mins: 25 Seconds: 48

Catiorioc, Your first two weeks are always the worst two weeks and you are just getting over them. The cravings should start to subside in the next while. You also need to start to see yourself as a non-smoker. It is cool not to smoke and you need to think that. It will help you to say no. Also, let your friends know that you are quitting and that their support would be much appreciated. Brenna Bilingual Health Educator

Hello everybody, I just wanted to tell you how much I admire you all for resisting the urge to smoke.... It's been 15 days now without a cigarette. I thought it would get better- but the tempation is getting worse. I'm a lot better concerning the "useless" inbetween cigarettes (on the way to work, while the noodles are cooking etc) but having a lot of difficulties with the "spcial" cigarettes in social situations. i loved the "bad girl" mage the cigarettes provided- I just feel such a goody-goody now... And how do I flirt when I guy offers me a fag and I say "no".... I know, you will say I must change my attitude- but I am just so frightened that I will give in. Today, a colleague gave me a beautiful cigarette holder- what a viscious present. Anyway, good luck to everybody (and don't stuff yorself with chips and chocolate as I seem to be doing...:-( CatiorocTextText My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/17/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 15 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 300 Amount Saved: 69.00 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 4 Mins: 32 Seconds: 27
