Hi Tresa, they probably have a big sign that says "be nice to the customers, they pay your wages" or something. I think you're giving them support by showing them what can go wrong with their systems .. for free. I'd ask to get paid for performing quality control for them! :) If we were next door to each other, I'd gladly try and fix your computer. Whilst fixing it I could hear your experiences on how you quit. I can never learn too much about things like that. I realise that I am just scratching the surface as to learning how to cope a smokefree life. aka I still have a lot to learn. My little musing for today is that everyone here actually provides a top class support role. Not computers of course but stopping smoking. You see, last night, I decided to make my threads available to my mum. Starting at the very beginning (4 1/2 days to go) right through to me making the beach. An eternal case of CTRL-A, CTRL-C, CTRL-V, for each single page. Theres probably a much easier way of course. :) Whilst copying the pages, I started reading parts from the very beginning, right through (it didn't help my copying speed). My, oh, my! I can definitely say that I was a dusty old computer with defragmented hard disk drive (habit), broken monitor (view on life), dodgy keyboard with missing keys (low self esteem) and a clapped out mouse (this is where I should insert a joke about sticky balls but as mice are normally optical nowadays I will say .. was moving in the wrong direction). But, unlike most support specialist who would have taken one look at me and would have said 'You're 'avin a laugh mate. That computer is a write-off, you want the new super dooper top of the range one. The one you have is only good for scrap. I'll give you 10 for it', instead, you spent weeks running defragmenting programs, replacing screens and trying different keys to see which ones worked. All for free! That is endless time and patience spent lovingly restoring this old relic into something that starts up and runs for some time, without knowing if I will crash and burn in a pile of burning broken plastic keys. I hope you like my analogy. That is why you are to me my great friends. I am glad you don't tire quick because my hard drive gets fragmented with 'MUST SMOKE' segments quite quickly. Anyway, I hope I didn't say anything that my mum might find upsetting or offensive. Its a lot of threads. Plus it is the first time in my life that I opened up to anyone about anything so I really am not experienced at it. If you have made it through my soppy emotional kev drivel without throwing up then a little story from the national papers for today. It has probably been reported about before however, this was a near full page article and thought you might be interested. I've never tried one (and probably never will, if I smoke it is the old way). Have you? E-cig 'can be puffed on indoors' By Mike Swain Science Editor 23/10/2007 An electronic cigarette has been launched in a bid to dodge the smoking ban. Smokers can puff away indoors on the battery-powered "e-cig" while enjoying a strong kick of nicotine. It has an atomiser to create realistic puffs of "smoke" and lasts for 350 drags - the equivalent of 30 cigarettes. But the Chinese-made, sixinch plastic stick doesn't come cheap. A starter pack, including a filter and a charger, is 50 while replacement filters cost 10 each. The maker claims the device is a healthy alternative to smoking because it has no fire, tar, or other harmful chemicals found in tobacco products. But it nevertheless contains 15 times more nicotine than you would get in a normal cigarette. Claims that the sticks are a good way to give up cigarettes are disputed by experts who say the ecigs will still create a craving for nicotine. The devices are currently being tested out at London celebrity nightclub Chinawhites. The club's co-founder John Stephen said: "Clubs should move with the times and offer members the choice to smoke outside or enjoy a smoke-free cigarette indoors. "We're trialling these e-cigs to see if our members like them - and the few that have tried them say they are amazing. "Our members who do wish to smoke should be given options that don't simply force them to light up on the street." Nicole Cammack, 18, from Ashford, Middlesex, said: "This is a good solution. It's elegant and easy to hold - and it doesn't make your hands smell like a cigarette does." Rex Newmark, 23, from Hampstead, North London, said: "It would certainly be a talking point. I enjoyed smoking it - but I think it's a bit too feminine for a man to use." The electronic cigarette was produced first in China four years ago. Beijing firm SBT developed the e-smoking technology. Manufacturer Golden Dragon, which now controls SBT, expects sales to double this year. The company's range also includes e-pipes, e-cigars and e-cigarillos. SBT's vice president Scott Fraser said: "We're a smoking replacement instead of just nicotine replacement. "The nicotine is delivered to the lungs within seven to 10 seconds. It feels like a cigarette, looks like a cigarette, it even emits vapour. "In many ways, it is like an actual smoking experience, and that's what makes us different." FAG FACT 8.3 per cent of smokers have used the ban to quit, 15.8 per cent are smoking less and 34.1 per cent smoking less when out. Great story, kelly! Kev, I have found that if I don't make a conscious effort to set some money aside for fun & treats, I actually end up spending more on them than if I had planned it. Hi Kelly, That is a great story. Your dad sounds like a very very wise man and I see it has passed down the family! You have a great attitude in spades! Thanks for making me feel a little better. MMMMwwwhhhaa (long distance kiss). I am back home and going to chill out and have yet another bath. I always feel a lot more happier when you've made your promise too!! In the meantime I am backing up my music. Tonights speciality is anything starting with G. :) My positivity has come back again just reading that post Kelly!. Weird stuff huh?! I think you may enjoy the parsnip story :) Tresa, if you are reading this, note I have updated my occupation. It should of course say 'makes a lot of tea for a lot of people' :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/12/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 102 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,550 Amount Saved: 428.40 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 19 Mins: 41 Seconds: 49

I remember when I was younger and found myself a single mother of two with very little money. I asked my father to help me with a budget because I didn't really know how to do one. So, he told me what to do then proceeded to ask me questions about this and that and how much here and there. Then he asked me how much I had budgeted for entertainment (probably assuming it was too much), and I told him I hadn't budgeted anything. Now my father is a very frugal man who spends very little and doesn't really see the point of spending on anything other than necessity. (I remember one time when I was a girl he asked why I went through shampoo so fast, I was only to use a pea-sized amount. He seemed to forget I had waist-length hair as opposed to his military cut. Also keep in mind that the store brand shampoo I was using only cost around 50 cents). Anyway, this day he told me that I needed to budget something for entertainment. He said something like, "everyone needs entertainment to survive and that one should not/could not deprive themselves of all pleasures". I have always tried to remember this when I feel guilty for spending on myself. I know my father is right and I know this because he is the wisest man I have ever met. I also know this because I could never imagine THAT man tell me to spend money unless it was absolutely necessary. Enjoy your music, Kev. Be proud and feel good. You haven't smoked for over 100 days and you no longer spend all your money on JD&Coke and cigs. You deserve to have some entertainment! Have a great day! I promise not to smoke today, tomorrow or Wednesday. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 58 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,740 Amount Saved: $339.30 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 5 Mins: 12 Seconds: 54

Hi New Me, Thanks. And a big congrats on a decade and a half for tomorrow. That is really important. I'll have to wait and see next week if I can overcome the guilt thing. Maybe I will discuss it with him tonight. It could be an unintentional guilt trip. Morning All, I decided to create a temporary thread as I broke my own rule about posting big pictures and slowing down thread loading times. I'll be posting here until Thursday. Thanks to all for their nice comments about the beach shirt photo. You girls are real charmers!! :) Live Wire Kev reporting for duty. First of all, I would like to promise to my great friends here that I will not smoke today, tuesday or wednesday. To my great suprise, I did not smoke on the 99th, 100th or 101st day! Normally it is a Kev tradition to get to close but be so far. I am happy I didn't adhere to it this time. Kev Musings #1 Jack? In the Box! : Everyone has something that makes them want to smoke. Sometimes I imagine the junkie as a jack-in-the-box. Certain triggers hold the key to opening the box ready and the junkie springs out to suprise you. The triggers are different for different individuals. I can imagine being a parent can be full of triggers, but also at the same time, full of great moments. I am told there is nothing quite like it. I haven't had that stress/enjoyment yet, I am just about to experience being an uncle for the first time I think. Thats likely to fill me with enough stress/joy that I can handle for quite some time. I am not sure that if I was a mother, I would even want to stick my newborn anywhere near these quitters shakey hands. Not that I ever have to worry about that. :) Ah yes, where was I?...Triggers as keys to the junkie jack in the box. Whilst walking in no mans land, every trigger seems to have key. The key fits the lock but doesn't quite open the box. Here a some verbal keys that fit the lock for me. A) 'Well if you smoke then i'll take away all those non smoking awards' It's a joke that is used more as a threat on quite a few occassions. Especially when I explain that I am struggling. The reaction from me is to want to pack up all the stuff I bought and hand it over and go grab 20 cigarettes and smoke one after the other. Of course what I actually do is internally go nuts whilst externally doing nothing. B) 'If x can give up y, then I am sure you can give up smoking' Now this one really really gets my goat (sorry mercy) and for some reason I really want to smoke. I am not sure why it is so strong. I would have lit up there and then If I were not in the car with no cigarettes. In fact I am still seething a little right now as you may be able to tell. Of course I know that smoking 'in-spite' is a really stupid thing to do. Then again, I worry because I am well known for doing stupid things like that. Then comes the usual 'Maybe I didn't really quit for me in the first place' questions again. I got them when my quit buddy started smoking and again today. Probably way more often that that but I don't notice it as much. It is at this point I remind myself that I did it for control over my own life first and foremost and that impressing my parents that I could handle quitting for one week or more was very low down in my list. Maybe it isn't? Maybe it is reverse order? Oh my little head! No wonder it aches so much. Wondering if I could hold out another hour smoke free, then somehow holding out. Having more baths with chillout juice than can possibly be good for you. Walking many miles with music on full blast but no money..just to stay smokefree! Just another day in no mans land. Musing #2 Conversation with a quitter. People ask me, do you consider yourself a smoker or nonsmoker? when I stood out at the smoking shelter keeping my smoking friends company. I always have answered that I am a smoker choosing to go through the hell of not smoking for x days and x hours. However, recently I have been using an unhooked answer (if I remember correctly). 'I am a smoker who is choosing not to smoke at this time' That's an SSC influence that comes out in me in my personal life! Musing #3 : Things to be grateful for. 1) The higher possibility that I could be a smokefree uncle. 2) I currently don't have to go out into the cold every 20 mins if I don't want to. 3) I still don't know what COPD is yet and therefore don't think I have it. There is something such as blissfully unaware if you are a hypochondriac. 4) I have some great friends here at the SSC that haven't given up on me even through my darkest 'life isn't worth living' hours. 5) My fingers and toes are still attached. 6) I am still smokefree. 7) Only 3 1/2 days until a new thread and a new week! Musing 4 : A stronger addiction. This is my musing on guilt for rewards. My weekly reward is 2 music vouchers for staying smokefree. Normally bought on a Saturday when we do the weekly food shop. And normally used up 2 mins after we get home. I have a pre-defined list which I cross off so I already know what I would buy before I get to the shop in the first place. When I get asked about this, I get told to ration my music, followed by a distainful look as if I went on all night bender without telling anyone. I get to the point of saying 'blow it, I don't give a monkeys anymore, I'll go and smoke and forget about the whole rewards process'. After a long while I remind myself that I should be grateful for caring parents. They're worried that I spend too much on something which is a luxury and can see that I might end up broke instead of saving for a house etc. It is a short blast of feeling great followed by a long time of feeling guilty. I guess this one could have fit in any one of the musings, from smoke triggers/keys to reasons to be grateful. Anyway, thats why I feel guilty for buying music. I wonder if I read too much into things due to my sensitivity?! Who knows, it could be the junkie me looking for a sign and a way out again! I spend a lot of time confused nowadays. Tonight I will go home and read Lizzies post that I have pinned on the wall, to remind myself of that glimmer of hope that keeps me going. There is a bright side to everything. And each day smokefree is a blessing. Anyway enough from me for a while. Time for another virtual smoke in the cold with my friends. Until later... (HUGS) from Kev My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/12/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 102 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,550 Amount Saved: 428.40 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 19 Mins: 12 Seconds: 39
