Weaning off chantix/Halfing the dosage?

Hi Aloha, I agree, if you are thinking about coming off the Chantix, do it slowly. I have read that most people do better by gradually coming off the Chantix rather than quitting it all at once. When the time comes, let me know and I will tell you how I weaned off of the drug. Welcome Cinnbabe! Congratulations to you and your husband on 3 weeks. You both are doing great. As I posted earlier, one of my doctors had said she wanted me to stay on Chantix for the full 6 months. I quit taking it after 6 weeks. I was feeling some of its side effects and I was very comfortable in my quit, so I weaned off the Chantix. I am committed to staying quit and believe so much of the quit is in our desire to remain smoke free that I felt I would be fine without the Chantix. Everyone is different, but I did what was best for me. As my doctor said, the most important thing is that I remain smoke free, which I have. Smoking is not an option! N.O.P.E. Hi Aloha, thinking of weaning off? Take it slow, I'd hate to see you hit a big pothole in the road! But if you're feeling strong, you do what is best for you! You know yourself better than anyone! Stay strong! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 82 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,050 Amount Saved: $865.10 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 2 Mins: 46 Seconds: 12

aloha, originally I thought I would be on Chantix for 6 months - fortunately my insurance covers the med. I didn't know if 3 months would be enough. For me, it turns out that almost 3 months was enough. I commend you for continuing the treatment for as long as you need to. It's still cheaper than smoking! Keep going with your beautiful quit! one of the reasons for me is the cost...$148 per 4 weeks. I was also wondering about how it would affect my quit if I just stopped after the initial 12 weeks vs weaning off it during the last month. After reading the literature again, I decided to stay on it longer than the 12 weeks, although I have been halfing the night time dosage, because it seems like the studies showed success with variable doses as well as with the full doses, and a much higher success rate in the long run with a longer course of treament. Just my approach, knowing myself and really really wanting to maintain this quit. -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 65 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,600 Amount Saved: $442.00 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 4 Mins: 14 Seconds: 2

Cinnbabe, I believe there comes a time in everyone's quit (well, those who are using aids anyway)that we just feel like we are strong enough to go the rest of the way without the crutch. There is danger in this thinking, because the aids are recommended for a particular duration for a reason...whether it's Chantix (my choice also), gum, patch, or something else. Stopping the treatment too early could have disastrous results. If your doctor recommended (heaven forbid) chemo treatments, would you stop them early? Bad analogy, but the only one I can think of right now. I did 2.5 months of the Chantix, skipped the last 2 weeks. It's all in how strong you feel, and how committed you are. I used the patch on my last quit, and thought I could be a "social smoker". We know that doesn't work, and I gave up the patch way too early. Like I said, the duration is recommended for a reason. It increases your chance for success. Good luck!! Thanks for sharing that MLK, true and faithful quit buddy I guess maybe I should get that book. I know I saw it once...before I was serious about quitting. After looking at their study results, it kinda makes me want to keep taking chantix, but I also feel like participating here has been a major factor in the success of my quit, so then sometimes I think I'd be okay with out it. All I know is, I never want to smoke again!!!!! despite the occasional cravings. -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 51 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,073 Amount Saved: $346.8 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 3 Mins: 11 Seconds: 12

Hi Aloha, I too was a Chantix user and one of my doctors had wanted me to use it for 6 months. I quit taking it after 6 weeks. I was comfortable in my quit and was certain I would be ok without it. I started forgetting to take the pill at night, so around April 21st I stopped taking the night pill. I did that for a week and didn't notice any difference. Then I started taking just a 1/2 pill in the morning and did that for 4 days, then just a 1/2 pill every other day for 4 days and then I quit all together. I have been completely off Chantix for a few weeks now and up until last night, didn't notice any difference. I have had little or no cravings. My doctor didn't see any reason to wean, but I thought it was better to do it that way than to just quit. I still think that since Chantix is so new it is better to be cautious. What really helped me was reading the book The Easy Way to Quit Smoking by Allen Carr. I heard about the book from people here and although I was well into my quit, it was a tremendous help to me. The physical part is over and it is now the mental addiction and something we will have to live with the rest of our lives. I do trust that it will get better and easier. Just my thoughts!
