Weaning off chantix/Halfing the dosage?

16 years ago 0 969 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Shakes, As I previously posted, I did 2 months of chantix faithfully. In fact, I thought I was becoming addicted to the med and, like you, worried about coming off it. The 3rd mo. I started forgetting the evening pill with no ill effects. I decided to start weaning myself. One weekend I was away and forgot to take the chantix altogether. I figured after 2 days will no med, I would just stop taking it. Again, no ill effect. Other than missing the wild dreams, I haven't had any other side effects and haven't had any unusual cravings. This worked for me, but be careful to do what is right for you. I felt strong in my quit and I have a lot of support at home. If you are considering a weaning process, it could be your body talking to you... Don't go off the med too soon and jeopardize your great quit. I had fully intended to do the full 3 months...or more if necessary. It just wasn't necessary. Just my experience. Good luck! Awesome, MLK! Danielle, I did speak to my pharmacist and she knew about as much as I did. She looked it up in her big pharmacists book and everything. It's such a new drug that their aren't any hard-set rules. I'm interested, though, in hearing from people who've gone off of it with success. It seems like tapering, like MLK did, would be more healthy and less of a shock to your body than just stopping altogether on day. I don't know...But, like MLK said: the important thing is to have dealt with a lot of the mental/psychological triggers while I'm on Chantix. So when I go off of it, I'll be solid in my quit. --Shakes My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 52 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,040 Amount Saved: $468.00 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 14 Mins: 40 Seconds: 43

Hi Melissa - I never really thought about it, but you might right. I have read that quite a few people cut back to 1 pill going into the 2nd and 3rd months. I know I felt confident I would not jeopardize my quit, so I didn't have a problem stopping. Also, as I said, I did have a couple of weeks left to fall back on if I needed to. The medication gave me the boost I needed to get started on quitting and it got me through the physical withdrawal. The support from my family and this website, and the book helped me with the mental issues. So here I am 65 days later as a non-smoker! I know I can never smoke again, not even one puff and I really don't have a problem with that. Members, If you are considering tapering your dose early, you may benefit from speaking with your pharmacist. They may be able to help you come up with a plan that works for you and will not endanger your quit. Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team

mlk- I read the Allen Carr book and thought it was very helpful also, and I am also on chantix. do you think when you are ready to be on your own, you kind of start to forget the second dose? I think that seems to be a common thread of the people who have had success with Chantix. Phil, thank you for your concern, but I will do everything in my power not to endanger my quit. If I need help, I will be here seeking out help from people like you who inspire me to reach for stats like yours! Hey quit buddy, thanks for reminding me how absolutely awesome it is that I have added a week of life by not smoking. I feel great and I am so proud of myself and proud of you for making it more than 2 months smoke free. I am always inspired when I come here and see you are right there beside me! Hi Shakes! I found that I was forgetting to take the night pill and felt no difference in my urges or cravings. So I stopped taking the pill at night. I took one pill in the a.m. for a little more than a week. Then I cut the pills in half and took 1/2 of a pill for a week, then 1/2 every other day for a week and then I stopped. My doctor had not heard of any adverse effects by stopping all at once, but he didn't think it would hurt to stop gradually, so that is what I did. I recommend you talk with your doctor before stopping. As I said before, I was very confident in my quit and knew I could remain quit without the medication. I still have a few weeks left that I could have fallen back on at anytime if I felt the need. A big help to me was the book by Allen Carr, The Easy Way to Quit Smoking. I had already quit for a month when I read it, but it really helped me. Staying quit and lovin it! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 66 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,112 Amount Saved: $264.00 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 11 Mins: 21 Seconds: 20

Phil You know I wouldn't ever do that...you can relax now, ok? Shakes I know what you mean. I think it's especially hard because it all goes out at one time. I don't know if it's true where you are, but here the starting pack is way cheaper than the ongoing ones. I figured out that it's like 50 cents less per mg. Just because I could...lol That adds up to a little over $30 a month. Not a whopping sum, but a sum I'd rather have in my pocket. Anyways, I'll keep you posted. I actually did just .5 mg twice a day for a day or two, but then I knew I was going to be doing some stressful things which would trigger smoking urges that I haven't conquered yet, so went back up to 1 mg during the day and .5 at night. I had some strong urges today, but I am fairly certain it was in response to what I was doing.....drawing up some legal forms...agghhh...as bad as taxes!!! Anyways, their studies suggest that the variable dosage is nearly as effective, at least up to 12 weeks, as the 2 mg per day. So, I'm going to keep doing 1-1.5 mg for the next week or two. Then if that is successful, I'm going to go down to 1 mg for maybe a month or so, then .5 mg for another month. At least that's my plan right now. I'll see how it goes. It sounds like you've been doing well with your quit, so the chantix must be helping, right? I wouldn't suggest reducing the dosage too early, although it sounds like MLK did fine cutting out early. I definitely wouldn't suggest just not buying a new pack. I think it would be good to have some on hand, because you never know how you'll react. Also, read the literature that comes with it...the study results, especially. I am so totally interested in this thread. Aloha, please keep us posted about the Chantix weening. I've got to go tomorrow and shell out some more money I don't have to get my third month of Chantix. It's so weird that I ever had money to buy smokes! Anyway, I'm interested to see if it works for you to stretch it out longer. And MLK: I want to hear how you weened, as well. All these "W"s are making me a little faint. ;p --Shakes My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 52 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,040 Amount Saved: $468.00 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 12 Mins: 25 Seconds: 54

hi girls Yes, maintaining my quit is most important. So far chantix is only minimally cheaper than smoking. In the long run I know it will be, tho. I am just playing around with half the dose at night to see how that feels. So far so good. Another friend of mine went down to just one pill a day for a month or two. That seemed to work for her. MLK, where have you seen accounts or reports from people who have successfully used it and then gone off of it? I'm happy for you that you could completely stop and not have it affect your quit. BTW, Quit Buddy Extraordinaire, did u notice that we have gained an extra week of life??? How cool is that! -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 65 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,600 Amount Saved: $442.00 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 4 Mins: 35 Seconds: 19
