Wonderful post pat, there is magic in the words SMOKING IS NOT AN OPTION, once i finaly said that to myself my brain caught on real fast, im a non smoker and loving every minute of it. Facing up to my addiction after 30 years was a big eye opener, i had always, always lied about how long i had smoked, i call it the subconsious shame, cheers to everyone living each day as it comes, and LIVING FREE....all the best jeanigirl My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/28/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 39 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 507 Amount Saved: $185.25 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 8 Mins: 8 Seconds: 57

Pat, Really great post for a newbie like me. I have never once heard the word "Addict" associated with nicotine before coming here. Your words really hit home, thanks for sharing your lessons with me ~Valic My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/24/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 13 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 65 Amount Saved: $68.90 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 23 Mins: 23 Seconds: 17

Excellent post Pat. Very clear and to the point and absolutely nailed it. I also liked this quote from Lady. "An addict is someone who disrupts the lives of others around them." That was it for me. Both with drinking and with smoking and it is really so great not to have that in my life any more. Nice to hear from you Pat - wish the IM still worked! Pat, my Magic friend, Once again your words cut right to the heart of the matter. What you say is so true. But why is it then that the "real addicts" (not us, lol) who are addicted to heroin or Rx drugs don't quit? They profess to want to quit and be free, but yet refuse treatment (sometimes free treatmente) that could help them escape their addiction? So many try, as we have, maybe several times, but cannot release the grip of their drug of choice. I can understand the alcoholics a little better, as their addiction of choice is also legal, like nicotine, and readily available. I have found during this quit that so many non-smokers consider tobacco a habit, not an addiction, and think that we should "just quit". They wouldn't say this to a heroin junkie... Thanks for another insightful post that really made me think (not an easy thing this early in the morning) Nance My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/14/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 112 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,360 Amount Saved: $543.20 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 15 Mins: 22 Seconds: 48

Pat Wise words as usual! This is the section I like most.... Ive gone one step further and chosen to beat this addiction while being positive and doing everything I can to be happy. Dont kid yourself that Im positive all the time or that I think quitting is easy. I prepared heavily. I worked hard and still work at beating this addiction, just like everyone else here. For me its happy work. I celebrate overcoming my triggers and I relish my freedom every day. I made a serious committment to myself and have promised myself to never smoke again. BE HAPPY! Great post Pat! The realization that I was an addict was the key to the quit for me as well. An addict is someone who disrupts the lives of others around them. That couldn't possibly be ME! How wrong I was. I had no idea the control nicotine had over me. There are tons of posts around here that tell of the changes the quit brings with it. I'm so glad you are doing well Pat. You have taken this quit with grace and style. Awesome Job! Joe, I think you've been replaced!!! :p But honestly, if you both keep writing posts like this one and Joe's recent one, then I don't see how anybody could possibly keep smoking! What awesome information you both provide! There's more than enough room here for the both of you and I look forward to reading more of each of your posts. :) Pat, that was a great post! I too thought that everybody here was being a little over dramatic calling themselves (and consequently ME) drug addicts! I mean, come on! But when I thought of all of the things I'd done to get my drug (going into a cold sweat when I got down to my last 2 cigarettes, rummaging through old butts for one that was only 1/2 smoked so I could get a little fix or standing out in a freezing blizzard in order to smoke) and it was then that I realized that that's DEFINITELY what addicts do!!! And therefore, I was most certainly one myself! It was not an easy conclusion to come to, but it was very important for me finally see that. If we weren't addicts, and smoking was simply a bad habit, then we COULD just do it "once in a while" and not risk going back to smoking full time. If it were a bad habit, it wouldn't control us... we'd have the control. But we are addicts, and as such, we must fully understand the power that this addiction has on us IF we choose to give in to it. Great post Pat! I look forward to many, many more just like it! Crave the Quit! When people learn the truth, understand the addiction, that is when the intelligent, well informed indivdual can make that decision to take their life back. Well done my Canadian neighbor!
