Thanks for all your responses. I did it, and you know what, it wasn't so bad !! Even with an eight hour delay, and lots of time to get worked up !! I did have to use some valium, but not as much as I thought I would. It was okay !!!

I believe the UK markets dramamine as "Sealegs". It's for motion sickness, but makes you really drowsy and is a pretty safe med. Another is benadryl, an antihistmine closely related to dramamine. Good Luck, and remember the worry before the trip is 20 times worse than the trip itself. ttfn Lauralai

Sue, the knot in my stomach is always there when I am going through an anxious episode. You right that even relaxation sometimes does not unravel it. I have used a heating pad successfully when trying to sleep. Apparently your body cannot register two sensations in the same place at the same time so the heating pad neutralizes the knot for a little while. I have a few other symptoms but the knot and my obsessive thoughts are the worst of it. Good luck finding something that works for you. Rachele

thanks Rachel for your quick response. I'll check the medication out. Am currently on Zispin which has helped me in the long term I'm sure, its just that sometimes at times like these I may need a little extra help. Are you familiar with the knot in your stomach thing ? Or is anybody else ? It sure is horrible, and despite trying to relax with tapes the feeling remains, sometimes for weeks.

Sue,the "technical" name for Dramamine is dimenhydrinate (I think) it is in the anticholinergics family and prevents motion sickness. It has the added benefit though of putting some people right to sleep... like me :) The Xanax is actually "technically" alprazolam which is a benzodiazapine and is used to stop panic attacks in their tracks. It does this nicely. It is a short acting tranquilizer which doesn't stay in your system long.... though over an extended period there is risk of addiction. The other medication which I used was a regular long acting med like Paxil, Lexapro, etc. I don't remember which one exactly. I hope this helps. Rachele

Thanks Rachel. This trip is so important to me, does anyone know what u.k equivalent of dramamine is ? And what other medication did you take before your holiday Rachel ? You mentioned Xanex, again I don't know what the u.k equivalent os that is, and said you also took something else but didn't say what. It may not be the right thing to do, but finding out that I can't cope when I'm a couple of thousand miles up would not be fun.

Sue, I too have experienced long periods of feeling well and have booked travel while calm only to find later that I am anxious. Like you my first attack was during a trip away from home making travel very difficult now. One of the ways I have dealt with it in the past was to get on medication before the trip and take along Xanax as well. Once I got home I went off the medication.... which in retrospect was idiocy for me. I also tend to travel with comfort items such as a heating pad, chamomile tea, a relaxation tape, a book about panic, etc. I discuss with the person I am traveling with ahead of time that there may be times when I will just need to chill out in the hotel room. I also prepare a "safe" person at home so that if I need to I can call at ANY time to speak with them. I have also done alot of visualization in my head before the trip of the places I will go and the fun I could have. It sounds silly but it does help a little. Oh yeah, as far as the plane ride, I just knock myself out with Dramamine cause I sometimes get motionsick. Hope someone else has some good ideas. Rachele

I was first diagnosed with panic or anxiety disorder last year, and its been a roller coaster since then. I have had long spells of feeling really well, and haven't actually had a panic attack for over a year now. I'm going on holiday on Saturday which involves a flight, and obviously being far from home. My first panic attack happened in the states, so of course flying and the thought of it has become an issue for me, but when I booked it I felt fine, calm and okay with it, confident that this wouldn't be an issue. A chance remark by my long suffering husband about what would we do if I felt unwell has now escalated into acute anxiety. My anxiety feelings were always a knot in my stomach which I hate and fear, and now its back, and fills me with dread. what if I freak out on the plane ? What if I'm ill while I'm away ? I don't know what to do. I really , really want to do this, and God knows my husband could do with a break, he's helped look after me for so long Does anybody else feel this knot in their stomach ? What do you find helps ? Help !!
