Keith, Yes it is the pain talking. Forgive me for what I am about to tell you, because it's gonna hurt, and I hope you don't think I am being too forward.
You need to grieve for that little life, that you won't get to hold in your arms, that you won't get to see grow into a toddler, or a teen or an adult, and as hard as that will be, a cigarette is just not going to help. You need to feel that pain and then let it go!
Take some time on your own or with your wife and celebrate what might have been. Give the baby a name and a funeral even if its your own service at home.
