ok, this is really weird....I first craved a cigarette in the hospital, right after giving birth to my first son. Up until that point I'd only had one or two cigarettes, and those had been 4 or 5 years prior, and I didn't like them. On the way home from the hospital we stopped so I could get some, and it had been a daily habit for 36 years, up until last march. I never have been able to figure out why. Mr Ed I just found this thread. I got the joke. Ha ha. I don't remember why I started. I was about 9 or 10 and it was just something I wanted to try and I liked it immediately! My friend turned green and never tried smoking after that. I guess I was a 'natural'. I don't really regret it. I'm just hugely grateful that I've now stopped. LMAO, John! I know exactly what you mean! I posted once about nearly getting sick at a red light because someone in the car ahead of me was smoking & all my windows were closed! There was no way I could smell it & yet I COULD! Why is it that now that I now can smell as cigarette being smoked 3 cars ahead of me while driving 65 MPH? I know why I started & why most people around my age did, but why are kids STILL starting, now that we know what we do & it isn't "cool" anymore? Personally, I started smoking to fit in. Not actually peer pressure, per se, but a desire be recognized as a peer. Lady, we never looked at the evils of smoking when we smoked because it would threaten the addiction. Ignorance is bliss and we were determined to maintain our bliss in addiction. Lainey, actually the medical community knew about the dangers long before the 50's, but since most doctors smoked back then there was little incentive to promote the dangers and quitting. I don't have the info available at the moment, but there was a doctor either around or before that time who issued a warning about the link between smoking and lung cancer. He was later forced by the medical community to apologize publicly for getting so upset over an insignificant thing. The real outcry happened when the Surgeon General broke with government policy and upset the apple cart with his warning on the dangers of smoking. Back in the 60's the Doctor told my Mom to smoke to help calm her nerves and help with her weight. No wonder we were all snowed, the medical community didn't know anything about it until the 80's. :quest: My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 176 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,400 Amount Saved: $1,856.80 Life Gained: Days: 21 Hrs: 12 Mins: 20 Seconds: 41

Q. How is it that when we smoke, we don't hear anything about the dangers because we blow them off. We don't realize all the different health risks of smoking except lunch cancer and even that doesn't detour us from having our fix? Seriously, did anyone know that you can lose part of your face or a limb due to bad circulation caused from smoking before you quit? I didn't. I learned all of this after I quit. I blocked it all out prior to quitting. Anyone saying anything against smoking was just trying to take away my right to smoke! It was my right to die a slow, painful death is what it really was. When I was just a little tyke all the men I looked up to, my dad and his friends, smoked. When I got a little older all the coolest guys in school smoked. This was a no brainer for me, if I wanted the younger kids to look up to me and the coolest kids to think I was also cool well then I just had to smoke. It's not easy learning to smoke but I did it! I was pretty shocked the day somebody told me you were supposed to inhale it and you obviously were not cool unless you could do that. So I learned that cool little trick to. I always sucked at blowing smoke rings though......I guess I never was "really" cool. Was it peer pressure? I don't think so, I did it to myself.
