Bear,
I think what we are to believe is that life is full of choices. I tell my 3 children all the time that when you do good things, good things happen to you. When you do bad things, bad things happen to you. We are all creatures of free will. We have the right to choose the kind of life we will live.
A life of addiction is there for the taking. So is a life of happiness and meaning. The choice is always ours to make. So are the consequences that accompany the decisions we make.
Just my opinion. Take what you want and leave the rest.
