Raised in a smoking household ?

My mom smoked until I was 2. My dad is still a slave to the tobacco, and all of his 5 sisters smoke. His dad just quit smoking last week. Sadly it was not soon enough. Doctors say he doesn't have much longer with us due to empysema. Now that I have quit I think about how he looked attached to that oxygen machine. He couldn't even move, confined to his couch for the rest of his short life. I think to myself-I don't wanna be like him! Mum packed up 44 years ago - she's now 83 and going strong. Dad died of COAD 11 years ago at age 78 as a direct result of his smoking habits. Funny, he would have been 89 today - Happy Birthday Dad! Sibling quit about 3 years before me. Penitent d1412

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Both of my parents and older brother smoked when I was growing up. When I was around 8 years old I would make no smoking brochures for my parents. Then I started smoking when I was fifteen. My parents quit smoking in 1995. I quit and now my son who also smokes has told me he wants to quit. I just wish my brother would quit. He and his significant other chain smoke. I really worry about his health. I was surfing along and found this thread. I thought I'd bump it for more people to answer the question. Everyone smoked in my family except my middle sister, who to this day hates it and campaigns against it. My mom quit when I was little, but started back when I was 16 and she let me smoke in the house then cuz I caught her sneak smoking. Sounds Genetic, doesn't it? Kelly, my daughter might "sort of" remember me smoking a pipe  it wasn't tobacco. ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/17/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 13 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 312 Amount Saved: $54.60 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 11 Mins: 15 Seconds: 38

Neither of my parents smoked. When I was 17, My sis 18, My brother 16, my parents allowed all 3 of us to start smoking in the house. (They didn't like us walking the streets smoking all the time, or leaving butts outside). But 2 years later my mom developed breast cancer, and the smell of smoke made her sick through chemo, so smoking was banned from the house again. After she passed away when I was 19, smoking was again allowed in the house. My Dad has since banned smoking in his house, and has lectured all 3 of us kids over the years. So far I'm the only quitter. The only grandparent I knew smoked. She died of CHF at 78ish. My dad smoked before he got married so none of us kids ever saw it. Occasionally when I was really, really young I remember him smoking a pipe. Sort of. Mom never smoked. There are five of us kids all smoke (except me, yay!). Of our 11 combined children 2 are smokers. My 3 all hate it. Thank God! I started when I was 13 because some girls I wanted to be friends with smoked. We walked to the store and they bought cigarettes and asked me if I smoked. I, of course, said "yes" and grabbed a pack of Kools -eww- and made like I had been smoking for years. Dumb, dumb, dumb! That was all it took for me.
