Positive Thinking

Kev, The length of the path is incidental, it is what lies at the end of it that is golden! And I can tell you, walking it, however long it may be, can be pretty magical too - if you let yourself be swayed! When I first posted this thread one year ago I only had 548 days quit under my belt. Now a year later and some 900 plus days quit, I still think and feel the same about being positive and in control of yourself. You are still what you think you are no matter what. No one does anything to you, you simply allow people to turn what might be a plus into a negative. No one crams a cigarette into your mouth, you do it all by yourself with a multitude of justifications. Take a good look at yourself in the mirror and reflect on what you really see, you might be suprised. Penitent and mc, Both eloquent answers I feel. Theres also a bit of Yoda in there too! You know you two would make great teachers for a 'Beginning Positive Attitude 101 : From faking to reality' thread. :) It might stop a lot of failed quits! You're right in the fact I did ask the question therefore I am looking at regaining my positive self. Its a very long path (negative) but it is a path (postive)...yes I am still working on it. :) So now to work on the visual essence. .. Yes Kev, it can be taught and then practised feverishly I hope, but answer me this question "Does everyone want to learn?" The answer to your second question is in my post. A negative mind asking about positive thinking is the first step to being positive. Cheers! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/18/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1177 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 23,540 Amount Saved: 5,885.00 Life Gained: Days: 189 Hrs: 1 Mins: 22 Seconds: 35

Just chiming in here on a subjuect I am a bit familiar with: It is my experience that Positivity is not so much taught as it is practiced. Negativity is basically a bad habit. I think positivity is our 'default' behavior. I know I wasn't born negative but after imitating a behavior I was seeing in someone else, (and at the time could relate to,) it eventually became an entrenched behavior of my own. When I finally realized I needed to find happiness within myself I began practicing the 'fake it til you make it' approach. And it has definitely made a difference for me. I appreciate life so much more these days. But like the smoking habit, it can seem easier to allow myself to fall back into the old, negative habit. So I keep 'praticing'; At times when I really would prefer to be down & unhappy I have to force myself to just get up & get on with it. And, you know, I surprise myself everytime when I feel better just pretending to feel better! I'm sure Penitent has a much more eloquent answer but I just couldn't resist getting in on a topic that is near and dear to a Cold Turkeys' heart. Cold Turkeys are positively goofy! mc

Hi Penitent, Thats a well thought out and written post there. Positivity is so important in anything and everything we do. Attitudes are very contagious. You can just watch it in human life. So my question for you penitent is : Can positivity be taught? and if you saw a totally negative person would you attempt to help them change the - into a +? My thoughts are that postivity can be taught, but it is also a genetic condition. Its all about finding that key and unlocking that positive vibe in people. Hallelujah!!! People who know me here know that I have been a proponent of Positive Thinking virtually from the day I arrived back in 2004. To me Positive Thinking is simply a mental attitude that allows into my mind only thoughts and images that are conducive to growth and success. It is a mental attitude and I expect favorable results. I try to educate my positive mind to experience happiness and a successful outcome from any situation. Remember, whatever the mind expects, it finds. I don't like or do misery!! It's really does not look like fun! But not everyone accepts or believes in positive thinking and that is their prerogative but oh boyThe trouble is that those people do not take these words seriously. How many people actually stop to think what the power of positive thinking means? How many even give it a chance before they eagerly get back to their "Woe is me" emotion? Positive thought is not magic, it is natural. When our attitude is positive we entertain pleasant feelings and constructive images, and see in our mind's eye what we really want to happen. This brings happiness and more energy to get out there and do it! Our health benefits and our body language shows others just how good we feel inside. Sadly, the converse is also true! Positive and negative thinking are both contagious. All of us affect, in one way or another, the people we communicate with here. Hence, there are some threads that are to be avoided if we have not mastered the power of positive thinking or we may be sucked into the mire. This happens instinctively and on a subconscious level through thoughts and feelings transference. People read our words, sense our aura and are affected accordingly. Now this is where many have misunderstood me in the past. You can be struggling with your quit and positive at the same time. In those cases, you will get all the help from me you need because you are already helping yourself immensely by being positive. Is it any wonder that we want to be around positive persons? People are more likely to help us if we are positive. Think about it! As I have said before, it is a choice. Choose wisely and be a winner! :) :) :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/18/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1177 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 23,540 Amount Saved: 5,885.00 Life Gained: Days: 189 Hrs: 1 Mins: 2 Seconds: 6

Thanks Bob :) Never knew your name before ;o I know what you're saying is true but it is difficult to do it consistently. I have had periods where I was very positive & had positive consequences. These past couple days I've been asking myself where that person is. Anyhow I feel a little more like that person, finally, tonight & it feels so good after all the bs that's been going on in my thinking. Just breathe.........
