It's my understanding that this is a true story. It goes to show that we don't always understand the nature of the messages we receive.
An Airbus pilot flying at 35,000 feet receives a radio call from the control tower to turn to heading 315 for noise abatement. The message confused the pilot and although he didn't understand the reason he prepared to execute the turn then stopped. With an indignant tone he radioed the control tower, "Tower, what noise do you hope to avoid from a plane flying at 35,000 feet?" After a brief pause the tower controller replied, "Have you ever heard the noise when a 737 hits an Airbus?"
Sometimes the really important messages are disguised.
