Actually, I'd have to say that my outlook has changed since I quit. I'm much calmer and don't get as caught up in other people's moods as I used to. Trust me, I still have my stresses and problems (big time!) but the little things don't get to me as much anymore. I also think the ease of quit varies even within a person... It was extremely hard from Dec to March when I was quitting on and off constantly, going anywhere from 8 hours to 4 weeks smoke-free. But then in late March it all suddenly came together and since then it has been amazingly easy. That's my take. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/29/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 123 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,476 Amount Saved: $501.84 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 9 Mins: 13 Seconds: 38

This is a tough one Mercy. Im not laid back or an A however I lean more towards the A side. I like to keep on the go but not until I drop. I thought about this and thought about this and decided that Im inclined to go along with Blue Cloud six-ofone and a-half-dozen of the other. Mercy, mercy me! Thank you By the way Mercy, how do you see it? I think there is a little type A stuck in my personality. However, this has worked to my disadvantage and to my advantage. When I do something, I want to do it well and I hate to fail....which is probably why it took me 17 years to since the last time that I tried to quit. I was unable to see "failures" as learning experiences. On the other hand, I can be pretty competititive which has helped me to keep going even during the rough days. Being part of this site has helped me to be more patient and to live each day at a time....and the people here have made me laugh even during the worst of times. I wonder if there is a type of personality that has an easier quit??? Maybe I was a go getter who got laid back by addiction and didn't realize it. I spent many years thinking I was in control when in fact I was being controlled by addiction to Nicotine. I was one of those who started because it was the cool thing to do and tryed to quit because it was getting harder and harder to blow off the side effects as sinus, colds ect. Only when I realized that I truly was addicted (after 40+ yrs) did I begin to feel like a looser. Laid back as if not bothered by it only not strong enough to deal with it. I think addiction is a hard egg to crack no matter which type of personality you are. I also think any type of personality can do it with the right amount of education and instructions. Hmm...very interesting Mercy, and now that you mention it, I have handled this quit the way I have other major challenges in my life. I made up my mind, after years of not listening to other people's opinions, quietly set my date, prepared for it (by getting and taking chantix, although I wish I'd known about this site ahead of time), and just did it. Since my quit date it has been a matter of will power and determination. No matter what I have felt like, how badly I have wanted to smoke, how strong the emotions have been, how addicted I am to this site, I have not taken one puff. For me, it is a matter of integrity and honesty and being an example to my children. When I say I'm going to do something, I do it. No excuses. I also value humor when facing challenges, so I guess that is why I love the threads that make me laugh. It never hurts to take life, and quitting, a little less seriously once in a while. I've used some of the same patterns of coping to handle the changes, namely obssessive reading and posting here, whereas before it was obssesive smoking. I also look to you other quitters for support when I am feeling really low, although it is still embarrassing for me to admit I can't handle things myself, just like in the rest of my life. When the going gets really rough, I look to my friends to help me through, but the going has to be really rough. I'm working on that, though. And helping others who are in the same or similar situation is a life strategy I use daily, which is definitely helpful to me in this endeavor, maybe even more helpful to me than it is to those I am trying to help. So, yes, I have approached this quit with the same personality traits as I do the rest of my life. Determination, integrity, independence, willpower, seeing the occasional absurdity of our chosen ideas and beliefs, resolve, the practice of service to others. And pride. I know that some say pride is a bad thing, but I am proud of myself for doing this, just as I am proud of other accomplishments that have taken a major effort. Great topic, mercy. Thanks for the opportunity for a little self reflection. -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 129 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,160 Amount Saved: $877.20 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 1 Mins: 39 Seconds: 10

Hi, Well I am a type A a go getter, when things need to be done I am obcessed to get it done, NOW for me seems harder as I want to feel the same as I did when I smoked, want all the bad feelings gone and NOW, I can control my life and most that I do for me but can't seem to get hold of this not smoking thing like I do everything else, I am a very strong person, not smoking is not so much the bad part it is not being able to control my emotions, to remain happy etc. do you know what I mean? like I am out of control in all my life but the not smoking??????? sound crazy? I do but is how I am feeling. but if I were more laid back I may have alot of trouble also but I am not in those shoes, if is easier sure wish I were! hugs and prayers, Bobbi My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/27/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 124 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,720 Amount Saved: $310.00 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 5 Mins: 47 Seconds: 38

Dear Cherie it is so good to see your energy and natural leadership back here at the SSC. Congratulations on your quit progress Roxie and I are thrilled that you are back and looking good. Mercy those stats really tell the story for you, 188 days quit says it all; you are winning the war on nicotine addiction. Yes we are all different yet the same during the quit process and that is why it is so important to share and give to others. Keep up the great work and we are looking forward to seing you on top of the mountain. Duffis
Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned. Interesting Mercy :) I think we all have a combination although usually more of one than the other. People chose to feel a certain way b/c that's what's comfortable for them & they get something out of it or they/we wouldn't continue to do it. For some people ANGER is their way of dealing with their feelings b/c anger is easier to deal with than pain. Although ANGER IS NOTHING MORE THAN A COVER UP FOR PAIN. Then there's those who allow themselves to FEEL THE PAIN more quickly without going through the emotion of anger first. I think finding humor in any difficult situation is a wonderful feeling :) So u ask which one are u? What a gr8 post to make us think a little deeper, or at least it's making me right now. Right now I keep going back & forth between feeling the pain, anger, confusion and an unwillingness to accept my life/situation where it is today. It's very hard for me to stay in the moment and not get ahead of myself,,,which only causes frustration and the fear of the unknown. It's times like these when I forget to LET GO & LET GOD :) Thank you for this post Mercy, I feel like crying but it's more of a feeling of release than pain, if ya know what I mean. Again what a gr8 post to make us think. I guess if we don't take the time to really get to know ourselves and how we "tick" then it can make it more difficult to deal with our emotions. So this post is helpful b/c it got me to really think about how I chose to deal with my emotions and how hard I can make it on myself sometimes. B/c like I said I have DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES lol JUST HAD TO SAY THAT BUT u know what I mean, I hope? LMAO, ha ha ha!!!!!!! I'm actually smiling for the 1st time in many hours :) But now I want to cry again, that quick :( If I didn't get something out of this pain then maybe I wouldn't need to feel it. Wow that's a confusing statement! Whatever, sheese it seems so complex and I just don't want to think anymore right now! So I'm gonna go put my new patch on for the next 24hrs :O Just breathe Cherie, Just breathe,,,yes I talk to myself to, lol. But I've heard that's ok as long as I don't answer myself too :O Just breathe....... Do you think people's personalities make a difference in how well a quit goes? Is it better to be laid back....where things roll off you like a duck....or is it better to be a type A go getter who is a strong self achiever to get the quit job done? Maybe a cheerful person laughs the craves off lightly...yet the grouch gets mad at the addiction and follows through. What personality are you and how does it effect your quit?
