Hi everyone ...just some info on this topic. Potatoes, tomatoes, sweet peppers, eggplant and paprika, are a few foods classified as "nightshade" foods. There are more. These foods produce a substance called alkaloids, can have an effect on nerve and muscle function and digestive function in people. It also effcts joint function. That is not good.... Especially for people like me who have fibromyalgia. Any joint or musclular problem will be effected by many people eating foods that belong to the "nightshade family". Researchers have speculated that nightshade alkaloids can contribute to excessive loss of calcium from bones and depositing of calcium in soft tissue. For this reason, researchers have recommended elimination of nightshade foods from meals of people with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or other joint problems. I'm not surprised that anything that has properties from nicotine would carry that name(nightshade).hmmmm sounds deadly..cuz it is. The vine many of you see in the woods or in your yard....that has pretty tiney purple flowers and later has red berries is poisonious. A couple of berries can kill a young child. Because the amount of alkaloids is very low in nightshade foods, like potatoes, when compared with other nightshade plants, health problems from nightshade foods only seem to effect people who are sensitive to the trace alkoliods from nightshade foods. Nightshades are really more known for being used in drugs...such as cigarettes. Nicotine is a drug with an addictive effect and is toxic in large doeses. The rest of the do good effects of nicotine are really from cigarette companies that are looking for other avenues to sell their nicotine. When looking at these claims you will many times see they are trying to sell their product. BOTTOM LINE... The leaves of all nightshades contain levels of nicotine. A potent insecticide can be made with tomato leaves!! FACT IS..... 8-10 cigarettes, if eaten, would be enough to kill a person!!!! It is not so much the nicotine in cigs that is so bad for you, It is all the other 1000 chemicals mixed together. Some of which were never intended on being smoked, nor should be mixed together. We are not only adddicted to the nicotine and chemicals, but the feeling and plesure pulled from smoking. it is way more than a simple nicotine addition..... Hello there fellow quitees. Found some interseting facts on nicotine & how it's contained in a lot of common foods such as vegetables (potatoes), tomatoes, bell peppers, cauliflower, eggplant, chili peppers, and even some teas. I also came across 'NIClite' & i was wondering if anyone has tried this ?. Makes me wonder if quitters fight nicotine addiction even though we are not ingesting it via cigarettes !
