Hi ANyone! Has anyone ever gotten gas so bad either due to anxiety or not? All of my organs feel so uncomfortable, my back hurts, my diaphram feels sore, my ribs, etc., It's very uncomfortable. I ate chicken wings last night before I went to bed, they werent too spicy, just slightly. Any help will do. Thanks.. Carmela

Pamela, you're right about the writing being useful for longterm recovery. I totally agree with that. However there times when it's not possible to write things down. The only point I was trying to make is that when you can't really stop what you're doing to write, you need to have SOMETHING to take your mind off of the negative or obsessive thoughts. There are lots of different little things that people do, it just happens that the rubber band thing wotks for me but there are several other ideas in CBT. I'm sure this little tip isn't going to cure anyones panic disorder & if I was having a full panic attack it probably would not help me at all. However, there are times when my anxiety is not very high but i'm having thoughts that could easily set me off into a panic & these little things that I mentioned DO help to take my mind off things. cdg, the point in writing things down will help you to eventually to be able to do the replacing of negative thoughts for positive ones all mentally without needing to write them down. It's necessary for long term recovery

Pamela, I agree that yelling stop or popping a rubber band on your wrists will not cure this problem, however when I'm in my car driving on the highway or in the middle of a concert I can't really pull out paper & pen to write a story. The rubber band thing works for me at the moment when I can't really do anyhting else. That doesn't mean it will work for everyone else but theres nothing wrong with trying it. As far as yelling STOP or picturing a big red stop sign, that is actually taught in CBT classes. Some experts do agree that these methods work in some cases!! Chanda

Stop! Be busy. Do a crossword puzzle, clean, journal. Write all your thoughts down. Make them into positive. CArmela

Hi everybody, I'm starting a program with school that will be very very stressful and time consuming. Today at orientation, I noticed that feeling coming over me again and I was able to talk myself out of having a panic attack in front of atleast 50 people. Every since the experience today, all day long I have those stupid over compulsive thoughts again to the point that I'm scared to start this program. I have waited a year and half to be able to start this program and feel this OCD/PD is ruining everything for me. July 4th was the second panic attack I've ever had but last two weeks and over compulsive thoughts came right along with it. Every since than I've become a huge paranoid freak that fears having a panic attack or stupid thoughts all day. Sorry for blabing away, I'm just really nervous about whats to come with the program. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks A Lot :)

HI, Yes, I quit my job due to anxiety. It was bad. Have you ever tried Wellbutrin? Carmela

yeah, i tried the rubber band method and pinching myself to shock me out of it. didnt really work, my ocd is worse when im alone or in a place where i dont want to be, which at the moment happens to be my house! theres too much to remind me of panicking and bad ocd thoughts so i hide round at my parents, but now im starting to get the weird thoughts there too..so i figure i have to control it whatever or wherever....has anyone else had to give up work because of their ocd/panic/anxiety? :)

I don't think yelling or snapping a rubber band on your wrist are the best methods to use to help control OCD. What my therapist taught me to do is to take the fear out of the thought, by writing it down over and over again until I became bored with it. Another option is to write a funny version of your thought down. For instance if your scary thought is that you are going to lose your mind, write about going crazy and stealing your neighbors car, driving it to the bank and trying to rob it with a squirt gun. These methods will work because over time whenever you have a scary obessessive thought you will immediately think of the silly one. OCD thoughts are just our creative minds dwelling on the negative and scary things, if OCD made us constantly think of running through meadows, with the sun shining while holding a puppy and eating ice cream we wouldn't mind it at all. Make your creative minds do that, dwell on the positive. If some of us tried the yelling method we would be committed because we would be yelling stop all day long and I know when I suffered from OCD if I had tried the rubber band method my wrists would have been black and blue from snapping all day long!

There are times when you really are not in a position where you can really yell (although that does work) so in those cases what helps me is wearing a rubber band on my wrist & snapping it against my skin when a bad thought enters my mind. it sounds strange but it works for me. Chanda
