Mace,You are doing this for the same reason I am. You said yourself you already feel better. Smoking makes you sick and at our age it makes you sick more often. I'm on my 13th day and just like you I have thoughts running in my head trying to say it's okay to smoke. N,O.P.E. just keep saying it. It is better to breath! We have to believe. We can do this. We want to be free!!Feel Good and Feel Free. Hi Mace - there are some real great posts here to help keep you on track. You mention about how good it was to smoke...well, if you kept on smoking, then one day it would not feel so great to smoke, but you'd still need to - the junkie in you wouldn't let that stop you smoking. Imagine not being able to fill your lungs beyond a quarter full (or less) and needing oxygen just to get around your house. Imagine having pain in your lungs...do I need to go on? It just gets worse, once a smoker succumbs to a smoking related illness, and the fear of all that it means, also knowing they probably could have avoided that illness had they done what you are doing now? You are doing great - stay on track - you won't regret it, I promise!! Mace, I know what you mean by saying that you loved to smoke so much. I am one of those quitters as well. I didn't think I would ever be a comfortable person without smoking either. The thoughts you are having now aren't any different that ones the rest of us have had. Believe it or not, you will love being a person who is smoke free. It takes time to get through the withdrawals. Take one day at a time and you will get there. Mace, Don't think about cigarettes in a romantic way. It is a bad love affair. They lie and cheat. They cheat you out of a healthy productive life based on freedom and lie about it taboot. There is physical craves and mental craves. Personally....I'd rather deal with the physical craves. Go back through past posts from members and read...read..read..all you can. Do a search on cigarettes on the computer and see if you feel the same after. I don't mean the typical search about the typical stuff we all know about. I mean some deep research. Cyanide in cigarettes!! Rat posion in cigarettes!! Our lungs have asbestos fibers in them from loose stands in the filters. The glue that holds them together causes cancer in almost 100% of the laboratory mice. Our poor endorphine receptors in our brains have been shut down from chemical imbalances caused by cigarettes and the same chemical used in fire extinquishers is now in cigarettes so they don't stay lit when not being smoked. There is enough research out there to keep the most nicotine addicted brains on the straight and narrow. Everyone of us deserves so much more than that. Your worth so much more. You are doing far too well to give up now!! If you give up now you will have never given yourself the chance to see what an addiction free life is all about. 5 days is a HUGE ACOMPLISHMENT!! Just two more and you finished "hell week" Hang in there. You've done great. MACE 5 days (soon to be 6) smoke free is an amazing accomplishment- and you have done it. WOW, WOW, WOW. When the Junkie starts talking, you need to hang up the phone. Distract, ignore. This is Junkie thinking - "I used to enjoy smoking". What you enjoyed was relieving your desire to smoke created by the last cigarette you had. Thats it, thats all. These thoughts may be persistent for awhile, but they will get better...as long as you don't smoke. You have been given some great suggestions on how to distract, ignore and the most important REWARD. You deserve it. The junkie doesn't deserve a cigarette, just a good kick in the ..... You'll make it. One day at a time. We don't want to lose you Mace. Stick with it; use distractions, really early to bed, knock yourself out. You will be better in the morning. Mace, My wife says that you should try spicy thai potatoe chips or a frosted brown sugar cinnanon pop tart instead. Recite the reasons that you have quit, take a shower, go to bed, take an aspirin, just DO NOT smoke. I'm really very please with your progress. I thought we lost you Mace. Keep up the fight, Mace. Yes, others have felt exactly that way, it's the junky that lives in your head throwing a tantrum because she hasn't got her way for 5 days. If you don't already have a list of your reasons for quitting, make one now. If you have one, read it over. If you can trust yourself to go out, get a reward other than smokes, something small like an ice cream or a candle. If you have to stay in take a nice, relaxing bath. That has often worked for me when I feel like that. It's a good fight, you know it is, you can win & you will feel a lot better in a little while. DO NOT smoke, it won't make anything better and you will feel far worse. Take my hand, Mace & hang on. We don't smoke. I guess I am fighting with myself alot today. It is like do I really want to do this. Yes I am begining to feel better in general without smoking. Yet somewhere deep down I keep feeling like why am I doing this. It would be so easy right now to go get a pack and smoke the entire pack. I am not even sure right now what is stopping me for doing just that. Does anyone else feel that way at times? It has not even been a hard day for cravings, just these thoughts of why why are you doing this when you use to enjoy having a smoke so much.
