You guys ALWAYS speak a lot of sense! I didn't attempt to quit/stop,I did quit/stop. I guess I have a lot or irrational thought going around in my head about now. Memory in this instance is a curse, because I have had loads of failed stops (just a small amount are in my previous threads). Do I trust myself? Not a chance, but I never have. And that is the thing I have to change in order to have a successful stop. Take two thoughts : 'I hope I don't crack and have a cigarette' 'I'm not going to have a cigarette, because I trust myself not to' I am the former and I should be the latter. So how to I change it? I am not too sure. That would be one of those life changing experiences I think. You're also right about the fighting. I do fight 24/7 (yes I even dream about non-smoking/smoking). And it is not just when I am not smoking but also when I am smoking. Thats probably a big insight into my mind. This battle is all-encompassing in my life as after all it is a big part of it. It's quite possible that I should stop stopping right now and work on trusting myself before I give it another go. My advice: Print out that post from BFS and read it every time to go down that negative route. Kev, Henry Ford said, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." Believe in yourself and you can do anything. There's nothing magical about quitting smoking. There's nobody, I repeat NOBODY, who cannot quit smoking. It's not like athletic ability or musical talent where some people have it and some people do not. This is just about going one day, one hour or one minute without smoking. That's all any of us have done here... and you can too. I can totally relate to your fears of starting again. As I wrote in another post, after you've slipped or relapsed several times, it's hard to trust yourself again. But trusting yourself is key to accepting your quit. If you don't believe that you are really going to make it, then it's impossible to accept your quit as reality. If you never accept it as reality, then you will constantly fight it. You said, " I just want to smoke but also realise that it defeats the object of what I am attempting." Are you attempting to quit or have you quit? By the 2 days on your meter, I'd say that you have already quit smoking. No "attempting" about it! It's done! A completed action. Now, all you have to do is keep with the decision you've already made. You don't have to make that decision again... you made it 2 days ago. So be proud of the 2 days on your meter and quit worrying about whether or not you will give in some time down the road. All we can do is control right now. So don't smoke NOW and you're doing the best you can! Worry about tomorrow when it gets here. Crave the Quit! Hi Butterfly Swimmer & Nance, Thanks for your posts. You're both 100% correct on that, so much so that you could have ESP! The whole positive attitude thing yo-yo's massively. I also have major problems with rewarding myself, especially during the week as it is getup->work->get home->sleep. I do that so as to try not to slip but it also leaves no time to actually do anything rewarding. When its good I am fine. When it is bad, I screw my quit within hours. Today in not good in the slightest. I can't identify the trigger, I just want to smoke but also realise that it defeats the object of what I am attempting. Thats with top whack NRT in me! I am not confident of my ability to last the day at the moment. But of course moments change. Is it possible that I am the one who cannot quit successfully no matter what or should I keep on trying? I am wary of running out of options to keep a quit going or options to start a new quit with. Maybe I just don't have enough willpower? Well I thought I had better post my real thoughts. They are the questions that go through my mind on a constant basis at the moment. Any thoughts gratefully received. I will take anything onboard. Kev, The first step to having an easier quit is believing in yourself. If you think, "maybe I'll do it, but maybe I'll mess up again" then you're not giving yourself the full advantage of positive thoughts. Believe in yourself 100%. Then make it a reality. Also, I found that having a very specific rewards plan in place was a good way to stay motivated to quit. If you think, "in 6 months, I can do this or go here" then you've got a goal - something to look forward to. So make a plan for rewarding yourself. Yes, quitting is its own reward, but sometimes we need more than that in order to keep ourselves motivated. Whatever it takes Kev, we're here for you! Crave the Quit! Good for you, Kev, You have armed yourself with all the tools. I am glad you sought professional advice...the more you can learn about the addiction and about yourself will help you tremendously. You also have everyone here, and as you know, someone is always here for you. As you learn, share with the group. You may never know how what you say can encourage a person to keep trying. Change your "optimistic" attitude to "positive" to remove any doubts. You can quit, no maybe about it. And, you will quit. Don't say "I think it will work this time", but instead say "It will work this time" and it will. By the way, I still have "junkie thinking" posted on my refrigerator. You CAN quit! You WILL quit! Nance PS Pat sends regards, she still comes around when she finds time. I have the hammer supply if you need it.
